Leader material for hard bodz
Gday,
After getting blitzed in the snags on 6lb fluorocarbon leader, I was looking at up sizing to 10lb fluorocarbon leader. Do you think this would be to heavy? What would you recommend? I am running 4lb braid over a 2-4kg spin stick with about 1.5 to 2kg,s of drag. I was also contemplating upgrading the rod to something that is stiffer in the tip, to get stuck into the fish from the get go. Any thoughts on this? One way or another, they will be seeing the inside of my boat. Just need to work out the best way. Any help would be great. |

I find 6lb to be ample for heavy timber man, maybe look at a rod with more balls to turn the fish faster ?

Any recommendations??
Don't really want to spend a million bucks on a bream rod. I am using a Pleuger at the moment and it casts 3 to 4 gm nicely.

Lock the drag up and go as hard as you can.Its brutel fishing but crazy fishing! Do a search mate, there is a few threads on BM in regards to this with some very good info.

Practice loading your rod up at home, you can feel the point where your leader stops stretching and is at its max, see if you can over do what you feel your currently doing when getting busted off. I drag around my boat all the time on 3lb braid and 6lb leaders when I get snagged.

I find I pull hooks a lot if I have Lock tight drag, I run a reasonable drag I try turn the fish as fast as I can but at the same time use the Kota to move away from the structure just incase he try's to get back in

I was more going to use the heavier leader for abrasion resistance than for strength.
I succeeded today with a heavier rod and leader. A 37cm to start off with, then a 50cm mulloway and a 36cm bream. Stoked with the out come. I had to grab the spool on the mulloway to stop it getting in the snags and luckily it turned in time. Thanks for the input fellas. It has definately made the cogs turn |

Just a side note mate, have you tested your drag to see how many kilo's you are actually running?

I wouldn't recommend using 10lb leader for bream, even around timber. Stick with your 6lb but just experiment with your drag. I use my hand to grab the spool to stop the fish in its tracks, after a while of using this technique you will be able to gauge when you need to let the fish run. Give it a go.

Been using the TORAY Excellent flouro leader for 6 months now with great results. Has great knot strength and have pulled fish from heavy cover on 4lb many times...
