Finns/Sunline PE. My experience.

I recently had to spool up a new Pfleuger Trion reel. I chose Finns original 6lb and about halfway through filling the spool discovered a knot. I kept going, finding about 6 knots in the line. The spool was full before I'd used the whole 150 yards (sorry, don't remember the reel size). I took the left over line back to where I bought it and showed them the knots in the line that was left on the spool. They immediately gave me another spool. I refilled the reel and went fishing. I had more trouble with wind knots in one session than I have had in the rest of my life.

I stripped off the Finns and replaced it with Sunline PE 6lb. The whole 150 yards went on the spool and it was still not quite full. I used it anyway and it is great! I will buy Sunline every time from now on.

Finns is crap! Absolute crap! I must admit I'm a little disappointed in Paul Worstelling who promotes the stuff, obviously there is something in it for him if we buy the rubbish.

Finns is not my personal 1st choice .. In regards to the wind knots .. Also be careful with the SUper PE in 6lb .. ive had some issues with it doing the same. I upped it to 8lb in the same Sunline super PE and ive been happy ever since ..

good luck mate

Haha! Oi Nagz where are you? I honestly think that finns is the worst braid you can buy. Nagz will disagree The lowest true breaking strain line that they make is 18lb and they then slap a 4lb sticker on it, which is the whole science behind their super dooper, fantastic, abrasion resistant, won't break at the knot, wonder line. Make some 20lb line, tell people it's 4lb, and they'll think it's the strongest stuff on the planet.

I've got to agree that Finns original is complete & utter garbage. I put some of their 18lb, sorry I mean 4lb rope on one of my outfits. I spent half of that session sorting out tangles. I thought maybe I'd overfilled the spool but cutting 10m off didn't help. Threw the crap in the bin as soon as I got home & havnt looked back.

I could tell the exact same story but I love my FINS and had nothing but problems with my first spool of 6lb Sunline Super PE.

I have at least 6 reels with 4 lb FINS and my 10 and 12 year old sons use them all the time.

Short answer go with what you are confident in if you aren't confident in you line for some reason it returns the favour with wind know after wind knot.

Tight.....wind knot free.......lines

i use 4lb finns, and in over a years fishing I've only had 1 wind knot, which was only small anyway. i would like to try some sun line, cos i reckon ill be able to put out a better cast, but finns is not crap..... a little harsh.

Paul Worsteling mainly fishes for bigger species, quite often with bait, so to me, he would rarely use the lower line ratings. Personally, when you are chasing big fish, i would prefer line that was perhaps, slightly thicker, because then you are less likely to lose that trophy fish....

coming on a public forum to bag a brand out, and call it crap is pretty harsh...

that being said, i can see that it is not the best braid out for breaming and light line luring. But it has its purpose.
....most pointless thread I've seen in a while....

Windknot's come down solely to how you manage your line. You can't blame the line, rod or reel. That said, a lot of expensive braids require more management, a bit like driving a falcon vs a ferrari. You can't drive a ferrari like a falcon because the ferrari demands a lot more attention.

You'll love using sunline when you switch. You'll be seriously surprised at how much further it casts, just make sure you learn to manage it properly.

Paul talks up fins because he is paid to. It's got nothing to do with how he fishes. If you wanted to fish a thicker line for whatever purpose, 20lb castaway is still a nicer line to use than 4lb fins.

Yeh I hope so, whilst I don't mind fins, i could definitely get some smoother, longer casting braid.
Yep, he is clearly paid, look at "club marine" and "shimano" and it's obvious to be able to see that. My point was that fins doesn't really excel in freshwater light line conditions. It is much better for more heavy duty kind of fishing. I don't think it is fair, regardless of which brand it is, to just bag them out in public for the hell of it. Fins don't try to put out DohDohDohDoh line, they do their best to put out the best they can. There's nothing wrong with not liking brands/products, but there is no need to publicly crucify them.

As the other boys have said , anything below 8lb in the super PE and your gonna end up with problems, the 8lb is the way to go and it still is a nice thin diameter for an 8lb braid....priced the same price as the fins too,I used 4lb fins once and that was enough for me, its like rope..... My grandpa recently came up for a visit and insisted to respool with fins, i tried to steer him away but you know what they say, you cant teach an old dog new tricks lol i give it 1 month and he will be sorry

Stick with sunline braids , they are quality mate

Just go with fireline

I recently spooled up with a highly recommended brand of braid thats double the price of fireline. It had 2 hard flat spots in it and was prone to wind knots.

It lasted 3 weeks before I got fed up with it - now its back to fireline - again.
