If its a brand new reel take it back to where you bought it.
If you bought it second hand get it serviced, or better still service it yourself.
IMO the maintenance port is pretty useless.

i use inox gease in a little squeeze tube, you can get the nozzel in the port for a quick squirt. Grease is said to be better than oil in australia due to the heat, if you put in to much and it feels like there is a bit of resistance then a few drops of oil usually thins out the grease abit.

Give your reel time (wear in) and it will get smoother being brand new.

I just use oil & have never had an issue with my Stradic but that only gets used in the estuary & fresh. I use a light grease on any reel that is used from the rocks or beach.

New reels have often been in their boxes for many months & it is possible for the oil & grease applied in the factory to have dried out resulting in a rough or grumbling reel. You could send the reel back & they would service/replace it or you could get it serviced at a good tackle store if you can't do it yourself.

Ditto, the Stradic FJ needs a couple of trips to run in for some reason.

My saros was the same. It takes time to the coating on the gears to mesh down. Thats why some people after a few uses, take it all apart and flush out the spall etc. and re-grease etc.

Dont use Inox, Use Lanox, in either spray or grease or both as it does not effect the rubber parts just as Inox, wd40 etc will. Also some reels come with the oil already and the instructions show to use a few drops in the port, but Shimano Australia said to me that that oil is only to oiling the bail arm, handle etc. Shimano make a special grease for the reels etc. You can even get some on Ebay, its a grease and oil in spray can form.

I love the maintenance port... Saros - perfectly aligned to the teeth on the main gear and oscillating drive. On my BTR 8000 OC it's so far off its like nothing I have seen ever before...

In my honest opinion - use it half a dozen times when its new and strip the reel and re-grease it to have all the swarf and loose metal thats been ground down off the teeth.

Slazmo, if you dont mind can you give me break down of what you do or use to clean all the parts ? Do you use kerosene to soak everything, and Shimano use so many different greases.........expensive exercise ? Or is it better to send to Shimano for service ? Do you even re grease the bearings ?

Without going tooo in depth into what I do, I clean everything with turps or spray degreaser - so far nothing has reacted with that over the 11 years of doing so.

I use solely now 2-4-C Mercury Marine grease for all my mechanical parts and with the bearings I use either 2-4-C in the drive bearings and high speed non load bearings I use a 'liquid metal' concoction of anti seize nickel grease mixed into Inox 'Lannox' oil - very noisy at first until it settles into its place and bearings go forever after that.
