Yak reels

For all you yak fishos out there.

What are you using on your yak trips?

Do you buy expensive gear or do you lmit yourself because of the beating reels take from the constant abuse in a saltwater environment?

Ci4 stradics are the most expensive reels i use so far. Im actually thinkng of droppoing down a peg or two to a sedona or a symetre to save money on bearings etc.

Waddayaregon?

I'd be getting the 2011 Daiwa Caldia. They have Mag Seal to help keep the salt out. Great reels and can be bought for around $200 from Japan.

I buy gear to suit the purpose of fishing, not how/where the gear will be used. That's a false economy in my opinion. Buy the best you can afford and look after it as well as you can. I wrap my reel in a plastic bag while heading offshore if its rough, that way they cop minimal spray. When fishing calm estuaries I don't bother. I've got steez, old white caldia, new caldia x2, sol, sienna, ci4, and they're all 95% or better in terms of condition/smoothness. The reels are a minimum 1 year old, up to 5 years old. Serviced yearly or straight after a dunking/big splashing. The caldias are awesome, $210-215 for a jap import.

I use certate , luvias , ballistic , ci4.
I just keep them high out of the water and give them a good wash after.

Salt water resistance was the main reason i bought ci4 in the first place i guess. Doesnt rust, light and strong. I love them. Im just keen to hear others opinions on the subject.

Ive been looking at the caldia recently for my 3-5kg airtorque. I like the idea of the magseal tech.

Ive always been a shimano man though.

Last time i went on my yak, i capsized on the launch at 6.30am. apart from my embarassment, i lost my sunnies, drowned my iphone, snapped my rod, and lost a rod holder. My 2004 caldia copped a solid dunking and to its credit, functions perfectly still.

As i realise this 'could' happen again, i bought a daiwa regal for 39 bucks the other day on a mo's special which i will use. Plus i know plenty of people who have lost expensive gear overboard whilst yakking, so for me im going cheap next time and certainly will be investing in a waterproof phone case.

Yeah its worth not taking your "best gear" to the office when yaking..

At the Hobie GF at Bemm i lost a digital camera and ipod, through drowning in the "water proof hatches"... The tackle boxes also were full of saltwater..

Just a couple of days ago i went over board whilst taking a release shot of my catch... Camera, wallet and phone came with me... Lucky this time i had replaced the old camera with a waterproof, the Iphone was in a dry bag, and all that was in my wallet was plastic....

Investing in budget tackle for the yak, is not as dim as it sims....

You take and use what you can afford to replace. Don't take too much either it will only get in the way. For me the Stradic FJ is perfect for yak fishing.

I take much the same philosophy. In saying that I haven't had a reel dunked since I first got into yak fishing in late 2009. Since upgrading my gear it hasn't looked like happening again. Yaks are far more stable than many give them credit for. I never leash anything down except a paddle. I only carry a life jacket when rules stipulate them as mandatory.

I find the only time the reels cop any salt water is from boats speeding past.

That's because you have an aircraft carrier for a yak; go the PA 12.
