Why do you use the 8 strand braid?
I've really only used the non-8 strand braid like fireline crystal, power pro, Stren microfuse etc mainly due toy costs and my first exposure to the 8 strand stuff is Sunline egi braid which was on a reel I did a trade for. That stuff is THIN and I'd expect that is typical of the 8 strand stuff. I had bad wind knot issues with the egi braid so I removed it.
I'm now looking for another braid to fill up a 2506 reel and I started thinking about the sunline super pe but being really thin, it means I have to put quite a fair bit of it on my reel to get it to a point where it doesn't look under-filled. That's really putting me off the super pe because I really only use 50m of line, if that, on my light hb applications. Its a bit wasteful to have to fill up 150-200m of line just to use 40m of it, I would've thought. So why are so many in favour of these super thin braids? |

On the subject of backing, why? I mean as in why would you opt for a super thin line only to need heaps of backing on it? |

becasue its so thin you can use heavier poundage.
Im running 12lb i origionaly bought for light line snapper fishing, but now use it for bream because it outcast the 6 and 4lb braid i was using at the time

In reality, an average 1000 size reel holds almost exactly 150 yards of ~8lb braid so they are perfect if you don't want to use backing but a 2500 size reel will almost always need backing
unless it has a shallow spool. What if you hook onto a jewie that could take 80+m of line? You would want to be prepared for that wouldn't you? I'm much more comfortable using a whole spool of braid rather than have any mono backing. That's why I purchase 300m spools. If you are regularly fishing rough territory, you can easily lose a fair bit of braid due to snags, rocks, pylons etc..I've always thought it best to have a full spool. After 6 months, I reverse the line so the last 50m of line is now on the inner part of the spool.

150m of 8 or 10lb braid or 0.8 PE will fill a 2506 spool perfectly. No backing needed! I use 8lb or 10lb on all my Bream combos.
A true braided line like a 4 or 8 strand line is rounder. It's cast better and ties better knots IMO. Sunline Egi PE is actually very good in my experiences. Been using it for about a year now. |

Simple use backing, if the braid doesn't fill the spool. When the line gets low on the spool simply top shot it by adding more backing every 6 moths or so or if a fish busts off some line etc then after a year take the line off and reverse it so the bottom of the braid is now on top basically gives your line double it's life I've had the same spool of castaway for a bit over two years now and soon I will replace it, but by using this techniqe it is very cost effective.
Oh and to answer your question why I use them simple becasue they are amazing and the best line you can get. Last edited by redfinfisho; 04-01-2013 at 07:24 AM. |
