Surface Breamin
Hi guys,
Been doing a bit of surface luring myself lately, along with the rest of the gang. Tracy Johnson caught his first bream on topwater, Steve Bain caught a PB and I even got to fish with Kim when she was home for Christmas (and out fished her on one trip-yeehaa!!!) For the record topwater bream fishing is an awesome deal, quickly becoming favourite lures are the following: Sugoi Mini Splash Popper (it comes complete with chem sharpened Japanese Trebles - saves your fingernails & wallet) which gives a great blooop with minimal forward movement. 52mm 4gm Next One Rise Bait - a great two hook surface walker, that requires very little tip movement to walk the dog. The lure turns off to line of pull when it stops, and turns the other way next twitch. 65mm 4gm Heddon Torpedo - (with or without props) from teeny to bass sizes. We've found that lures with two (chemically sharpened) trebles (one under the belly and one in the tail, especially if it has a tail feather) will really increase your hookup ratio. Tail feather trebles are also good for scenting up with the Spike It Oil spray. We have also taken note of you guys and your big lure scenario, and have thrown 4” lures and had bream literally clawing over each other to have a swipe at them. I reckon if we retrofit 6” lures with sz 8/10 trebles, we will still catch the buggers. nb: look out for Kim's article on topwater breaming in one of the mags and check out Sewelly's topwater bream in Modern Fishing's new Lure Fishing magazine, there's some great topwater tips in the MF article for all species. And the fish in the double page photo of Kim & topwater bream in MF was around 1.26kg. Cheers to all Brad Holman

Good stuff man.
I bought that mag and there are some great articles in there. Really worth buying and it's only like $6.75. What kind of retrieve were you using when using that first lure, the silver one? Cheers

Hey Chris,
retrive depends on the water being fished and the attitude if the fish. Some times you don't have to do much at all, like when up the creek and the bugs a flying and the fish are going berko. Generally you would cast out to structure and let the lure sit until the splash down rings disappear. If the fish don't come up and smack it straight away. retrieve with small jerks amking the popper spurt just a couple of water droplets much like a prawn flicking on the surface. Work the lure with the rod tip so use a stick with some stiffness in it for best results. I was talking to a couple of guys who fished the Nerang River 2 w/ends ago with the Sugoi's. They said they had the best days Breamin for ages and all on poppers right thru the day. They fished Rockwalls and Pontoons/Jetties for about 40 fish for the session (5 hours) including 3 Trevally & 1 Mangrove Jack. Apparently Warren does have access to them so let the guys know and he may be able to get some for you. Cheers Brad

Hi Brad,
Where can I get the topwater HB that you mentioned? I bought a Sugoi in the US last year but haven't seen it in Australia.... Haven't seen the other HB that you talked about in your posting too.... Being in Adelaide don't have as much choices..... any online tackle shop? I don't think I've seen it in the Breammaster store... |

Lets face it, there are very few poppers and sticks that bream wont take off the surface as long as they are in the mood and are not intimidated by it's size.
Keep this in mind though: Early morning after a hot day that ended in a big wind = lots of terrestrials blown into the water. Tide rising, preferably the last third just as the good munching spots are being covered. Both these scenarios can produce amazing topwater action. Thong things, Buggi Pops topwater plastics etc etc have been braining them for ages..... Get out there guys and enjoy

Was watching rex the other day and they where using the softplastics but with no wait retreving it on the surface and when they seen the fish comming up they would stop and it would start to sink and the fish would nail it
