Top Water Lures, what do the fish see ??
With Top water lures like Poppers, JItterbugs and R2s Cicada Popper, what do the fish see. From below not much just colour, but from an angle i assume they can see the side and top of the lure where all the colours seems to be ??? I like the r2s Cicada Popper for local river/estuaries, but all the decorations etc are on the top and not much from the bottom, mainly bib.

I reckon the decorations are what catch the anglers
. having said that clear poppers, walkers etc. are very popular in the estuaries on bream and whiting and the darker coloured surface lures are popular with bass and freshwater anglers. I personally think the surface commotion that the lure is creating is what draws the fish in.

Yeah its interesting. If you look at the bottom of all top water lures, they either have the brand name on it, the plastic or metal bib taking up most of it. Unless the fish can see from the side or the colours bend around. Jitterbugs are interesting, and they have different colours, but a night time lure, purely silhouette.

Yeah as Tarren said, IMO the colours on the top of the lures are to catch anglers, fish can only really see the bottom of the lures!

As you work your lure it will roll side to side, so the fish will still probably see the top colours.

Well all the trouble they do to do pretty up the tops, i would hate the fish not to see it before they get their jaws hooked.

Saw a post on another site where a bloke put reflective tape on the top of his bass lures so they were easier to see them at night when they go in the trees.Just shine your light in the tree and easy to find.
cheers....roy |

So we really should be choosing the topwater on what can be seen from under, shades may be important with clear lures, and those with pretty wings above the water dont mean much unless they effect the action.

I know what you mean, if fish dont see colours why buy different colours? But saying that why do some colours work better than others? Black Jitterbugs work great in the afternoon and into the night, even in pitch black, but they do have that great sound to their credit.
Trying to analyse this stuff will only do your head in. I just go fishing.
