Breamless session

Finally got out of my little hole in claremont/nedlands and went upriver today. Went to tranby house, bassendean near the guilford bridge and ascot near the other bridge. Saw plenty of snags that looked the goods, only problem was...no fish!

Was using 1.5" muscadine sliders (all i had) with the 1/32 jighead, 10lb leader directly to the fireline and fished from around 11 - 5;30 pm. My friend managed one undersized bream on a prawn, and the other bream we saw was a nice one around 38cm by another guy also on bait.

I think I only felt one hit all day, fished all around the snags on all possible angles, even inside the snag, tried varied retrieves including short jerky retrieves and long shallow hops and whatever else you could do with a bit of plastic on the end of string...

Interesting thing is that I saw a few flashes of what were probably bream, but they werent interested.

What do you think was wrong guys? The gear used or locations, time of the day or do you think my technique is just way off? It just seemed totaly dead all day, been catching more bream down at jojos in the last few nights...disappointing really.

i dont think that it is just you. a few of us have been out about 3-4 times this week for only a couple of fish. its very hard work at the moment

i personally was using hards most of the time but we have mixed it up with the softs - to no avail. the only fish that we have seen taken has been by the soakers!!!!

hopefully it will start to pick up again soon. we'll have to wait for the weekend reports

i went with the guys on a session on wed arvo for the same result , three boats and a few guys on shore for the net result of three bream. That was from maylands boat ramp all the way up to fish market reserve in bassendean.
I was in a boat and i did notice on the sounder that the water temprature was up around 27 celcius. My theory is thats to warm and the fish are off their food. I know i dont feel like eating when its stinking hot. Maybe somebody knows more about fish and water temprature and can shed some light on the matter.

As for your technique that beats me cos i've still to crack my first one on lure.

welcome to the wonderful world of mr bream

some days they just dont want to eat what your offering.

ive had days where it doesnt matter what you put in front of them they just wont touch it. you get follows on hards and looks at softs, but no interest in eating it.

i also think that what doesnt work at 1 stage of the tide/day might work at another time, but we think that we have tried that plastic/lure and it hasnt worked, so we dont try it again at a later time.

thats what makes this adventure so exciting

one day you think you have cracked it and the next your fishless

a good excuse to keep trying.......and buying new stuff

hi torvic i have never fished the perth area but fishing from shore is always tough usually limited spots that look good but i find if you dont catch them in the first few casts then not much chance after that. Keep putting in the hours and the better times will become clearer. But the fishdon't always play nice

Thanks for the replies guys, comforting to know it wasn't just us then.

I've only got a couple of weeks max before school starts again, hoping to break the duck (where did this come from? cricket?) before I get into the books again.

That was only my first time lure breamming upriver as transport is a problem, maybe I should come along with you guys one day in your fortnightly trips

btw what are your opinions on bream and the moon phases? Dont know if this topic has been covered before, but it could be the new moon thats causing all this strife. Tricky thing is though the last 3 nights a friend and I have been catching quite a few bream in Nedlands at night, with prawns

Really want to get into the artificials though, got to raise the notch a level

When the fishing is slow I like to change what I'm doing until I find something that works...

Was the water really clear?? If so, your 10lb leader may have been scaring them off, so I'd be going thinner

Also, cutting down the size of the Slider by a cm or so can help convince a fish to bite

Experiment a bit - the fish have got to be there, it's all a matter of cracking what works

dave the water is really dirty at the moment so it is not the leader that is scaring the fish off.

we have tried basically everything hards softs leaders right through to fishing 2kg mono

personally i think that it has just been shut down- something to do with the moon (come on guys someone must know something about fish and the moon????)

Yea the water was pretty dirty. But I think I've got to get some more thinner leaders as I've seen at claremont at least the bream follow the sp only to dart away once it was close enough.

I hope that the bream are only off the bite temporarily...my friend scared me by suggesting that maybe there has been some kind of leak into the river thats wiped out the entire bream population!

Or maybe...maybe these last few weeks so many ppl have been keeping the bream in numbers the population has just gone dooown...

Even trying something completely different (think Bushy's plastic crab in 'The Bream Bible') can produce when times are tough

It could just be shut down, and as far as phases of the moon go, I've fished pretty much all the way through the cycle and haven't really noticed a big difference.

How's the barometer over that way? That definitely plays a part

dave the latest barometer reading was 1009hpa

the water temp has been quite warm 27 degrees i was told the other day. do you think that this has something to do with it???
