40hp speed

I recently purchased a stessco bass tracker 440, it's pushing 47kmh with full load on board. Wondering what sorta speeds people get out of 435 hornets etc with a 40hp. I have the Yamaha 3ylinder 40 2 stroke at the moment has the standard prop and has great acceleration but seems to rev alot at wot. Hard to tell though without a tachometer. Anyways any tips on props I should try would be great.

Hi todd
I have a stessco 450 catcher with a 40hp 4 stroke, at first I thought it might be alittle undergunned with this motor but results were quite surprising. It will run at just under 60 km/h by myself and with two guys 60lt of fuel and gear will run between 50-55. I also mucked around with props and on mine to maximise performance but on a boat of this size/weight you'll only ever get maybe a max of 5-10 km/h increase if your lucky without overloading your engine. I tried a number of props but the best all round was a solas 11 1/8 by 14 pitch followed by a 11 1/8 by 13 pitch. Not much difference between them other than the 14 has a 3 km/h top end over the other 13. But you need to hook up a temporary tacho to find out exactly what revs you hit. Also i have my outboard jacked up to the max with a SE Sport 300 hydro bolted on just for a better hole shot and low planing speed. It will only get its top speed in a straight line and trimmed to the limiter and blows out if you try and do any sort of turn. But is has resulted in what i think is its maximum performance know.
Hope that helps a little.

hi guys, ive got a Makocraft 440/485 Frenzy with a 40 mercury (4cyl-2stroke) top speed is only 41kph with 2 up. I must admit however i am pushing a lot of weight for this small motor. (i.e livewell, baittank and full front cast deck)
Cheers

Thanks for the help guys, 55-60 is the sorta speed I was aiming for. The motor was mounted way too low from factory. I've lifted it up to line up with the hull, I'm yet to try it like this but from what its done on previous boats this should get me 50km loaded with 2 people batteries etc. I only lose 1.5kmh when taking a 2nd person. Think my props 11 x11 3/4

I have a 4.1m Quintrex Dory WB with a Mercury 40hp 2 stroke on the back. The motor is mounted too low by one hole and my prop is more or less at the end of its life cycle.. I get 52km/h with just myself + gear in the boat. With myself + 2 kids + gear I get about 48km/h, with myself + wife + 2 kids + gear I get about 45km/h.

I have full floor, front and rear casting decks, deep cycle, bow mount, 25-35L of fuel, starting battery, small esky with tools, tackle box, tackle bag, anchor with way too much chain, safety gear.. She's quite heavy all loaded up.

I'm hoping that with replacement of the prop I might see a little more top end and cruising speed. Hole shot at the moment is absolutely stunning.. I don't mind swapping some hole shot for top end speed.

Incidentally my prop is 10 3/4" x 12p ... Though with how worn it is it's anyone guess as to what it "really" is at the moment.

I have a df40 on my cxc 4.3 and pull 53km best case scenario and around 48km against current full live well and mate on board, but would average around 50kph.

I can concur with most peoples responses so far, I have a 4.3m Clark Dambuster with a 40hp eTec, with only 1 up, empty live well and no gear i have topped out at a touch over 55km/h. Average speed with 2up, full live well and all the gear is 51km/h.

I would look at your prop pitch. Higher pitch pushes the boat further per revolution. If you are over reving then you could benefit from a higher pitch prop.

Higher pitch will reduce the acceleration a bit but give you better top end speed.

So I'm not far of the mark pushing 47kmh and only lose 1kmh with a 2nd person. Not sure on boat weights but mines got 3mm plate sides and 3mm bottom and I have a large 165amp hour under the front deck as well. Yet to run it with the motor lifted but should hit the 50's and hopefully with a decent prop I'll get close to 60kmh. There's so much variation in different propellers with pitch, rake, cupping and overall diameter. Does anyone know if tohatsu and Yamaha props are interchangeable. My brothers got a 50 tohatsu on a thundercat and wants to upgrade his current performance prop.

I own a Stacer 435 Barra Elite & have the same motor as you, Yamaha 40hp 3cyl 2 stroke with a standard yamaha ally 12P prop. My boat is Tiller steer with power trim/tilt & electric start & ran at 54kph WOT as bare hull.

I have added extended deck/livewell plus 80lb minn kota ipilot with 2 x105amp batteries(62kg) & the boat now runs 51kph WOT.
