Quintrex Dory 420 opinions on modifications.

Boats in getting looked at right this point of time.

My plan was to extend the deck about 600mm, including a bracket for an eleccy and sounder mount joined to the deck.

The mount for the electric etc is no drama, however the guy tells me I'm better of lowering the deck about 200mm and run it all through the hull for balance purposes.

I don't really want this, as it's more of a raised floor than a deck and at that low, the sides of the boat can be a nuisance when working lures.

But again, having never took the dory out I'm a bit unsure on stability and how well a extended deck will cope on it.

Has anyone done this to there dory, or a similar boat with the same bow?

Opinions on this would be good, I told the lad I would get back to him in regards to what I want to do with the boat tomorrow.

Any help or advice would be taken aboard and greatly appreciated.

Hey bud, I used to own a decked out 420 dory, if you do a search you should be able to find a plenty of pics of it. It had aftermarket front and rear decks built. Was an awesome little weapon and even with the relatively high decks it was well balanced and got into some very skinny water.

hey mate, I put custom decks in my tinny and as far as stability goes I couldn't be happier.
I'm not sure how high u have gone but with the height of mine I can have 2 blokes on the front deck and I have never had stability issues.
Of course u need to remember its a tinny, not a bass boat so it will never compare but for what it is I'm pretty happy.
Also mine has pretty high sides.

Looks nice, pretty much what I plan to do to mind. Do you think a 50hp evinrude would be too much on the back?

At the moment its only 30hp, and not sure how well the 30 will cope with that extra wait at the nose.

Here's my Dory;

It's pretty stable for what it is... definitely would be more stable having a lower casting deck however i dont think it's worth the hassle...

Came with the wide gunwales when I bought it.. If I recall, you can get it done to a Dory for about $500.

I can fish two on the front deck with absolutely no concerns about stability.. I even had it out on some nasty chop and stood on the front deck OK. Fished a weekend with it recently with two in it (both of us not exactly sure footed out on the water) and we didn't have any concerns moving around the boat. She barely wobbled. I don't know what these bass boats are like, but if they're noticeably better than one of these dorys for stability then I can only assume the only way to tip a bass boat would be on dry land with a fork lift. lol

As for motors.. Quintrex 4.1 and 4.2 Dorys are only rated to 40hp MAXIMUM... 30hp should still see you fine most of the time. You might get a little slow if you had a live well and 3 in the boat, but you'll still get to where you want to go. I have the big displacement USA made Mercury 40hp (963cc compared to about 640cc for other brands 40hp motors). Getting on the plane is only marginally worse with 4 people than with 2 and 1up to 4up I only lose about 5km/h off my top speed. Love the torque.

Cheers Mate, I have a 40hp yammy 4 stroke om mine and I dont think I would want any more weight on the back. Not sure how much it weigh's.

About the same as my Merc 2 stroke lol.. 93kg is what mine weighs. A 4 stroke yammy is going to be between 97kg and about 110kg depending on the model. Definitely sit with the bum low with so much weight down the back. They really needed to have a higher transom imo. That said, I'm very interested to see how it sits in the water now I've got my bow mount and deep cycle up the front (rather than transom mount and deep cycle down the back). May end up looking at putting the fuel tank up the front as well for better weight distribution. No reason my safety gear can't sit down the back where the tank is now.

Just a note.. Make sure you get a leccy with a 54" shaft. I have the 48" shaft and it's really not long enough. It's OK if I'm up on the bow and it's calm, but add a decky down the rear and a bit of chop and the prop blades will start breaking the surface... I'm now on the lookout for a replacement leccy. >.<

Oh right? Didnt think a leccy could make much a difference on bouyancy.

But, when you think about it. You can see how it does, I think mines only something like 40".

Just an update on the boat, its in getting welded now.

With a extended deck, base floor will be raised 150mm including the sounder and electric mount.

Will post pics when its done, (mid next week) and then again once I place pine on top of tge deck and carpetted.

Awesone info guys!!! How does the leccy go bolting it on the front thingo(sorry forgot the name of it - mabye bow? Lol). Does it wobble around much?

Have any made a better/fuller floor because the standard one seems a little crappy to me. Ie not wide enough.

Pivot the length refered to above is more about the shaft length than bouancy. As a 420 owner i would agree that the extra length aforded from the 54 is useful. I find the 48 ok but if i am trolling on it by myself in chop the blades will be airating the water instead of pulling the boat through it.
