Cracked and Corroded Outboard Leg?

Hey guys,

I was washing down my outboard today and noticed some corrosion and cracks in the upper part of the leg. I wash my outboard after every outing so i am a bit confused how this has come about. I have attached a few pics. Can this be fixed? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cracks are usually caused by impact lower down. Do you have a wider angle pic showing the location of the damage?

Yowser, go and see the dealer Tim.

Corrosion is a by product of breaking the surface coating (cracks).

Doesn't look like normal wear & tear, but what do I know.

She's are knackered. It's not worth fixing, parts alone are roughly $1000+ and it's 15 years old. Luke at Chivers Marine has helped me out for the comp this weekend by fitting a traded in 30hp he had available and is sorting out a price for me on that. It's only 5 years old.

Luke has provided an outstanding service and I would highly recommend anyone in Perth to go to Chivers Marine in Bibra lake. Thanks again bud.

Cheers
Tim

You should be able to sell the parts from the old motor Tim, the dealers usually charge people an arm and a leg for second hand outboard bits! Might make a bit of your money back..

You may want to invest in some better anodes on the lower leg also, and some Saltex when you wash her down. I had a corrosion issue with my 18month old Suzuki DF6 - would make your corrosion issue look like a blemish...

In hindsight wish I had the knowledge I have now with anodic reactions.

That crack is very deep and the corrosion is most likely right through it,so it would take a lot of work to grind it all out,to attempt a weld repair, not to mention you'd quite likely need to disassemble it to do so and then you have risk of distortion on top of that, either way it would be a pretty expensive repair,so just replacing the thing and parting it out is probably your best option,as you've already found.

hey nate the reason this is happened is from transporting with out a leg stand or not haveing your engine supports on its pretty common to see and a few people weld them up but the end of the day its depending on the age of the engine and what you want to do but i reccomend a new engine haha

i would agree with the above and probably too much torque being applied to the bolt near the area in question by a lazy mechanic at some stage

Hey Tim. I have just replaced that bracket on a 130 Jono. A am a boat builder so I had a jeneral idea how to go about it. But it is honestly not a hard fix if you can get the part from an outboard wrecker. Would be happy to talk ya threw it if your interested. Cheers Chris.
