Import Trailer

Hi

Its the first time I am importing a boat and trailer. I would like some advice on the registration of the trailer once it arrives in Brisbane.

The trailer is an Australian made trailer and is fully compliant with Australian requirements. I have already lodged a Import Trailer Permit Application.
The ATM of the trailer is 1,100kg. It's single axle.

But I have one question, how do I get the trailer registered in Queensland? What must I have to be able to collect the trailer from the broker and tow in on public roads???

Oh this is stressful...

"Australian made" ??

You will have to get a movement permit , I would say.

yeah grab a permit then get it to where you are based and whoever you are getting to do any modifications if any are needed to get licenced

dont think permits too badly priced

hey thanks for replies.. yes the trailer is Quintrex, australian manufactured and exported from australia 2 years ago. The trailer is fully compliant and does not need any mods.

I imagine a movement permit allows me to take to to my place - but I read in the QLD Dept of Transport that to register the trailer i need a safety certificate and a weighbridge certificate. HOW CAN I DO THAT WITH THE BOAT ON THE TRAILER??? It's not practical, and doesn't make sense!

Would i need to register the boat, take it to the water, then take the trailer to RACQ to get a safety certificate, then to a weighbridge, then to Dept of Transport for the inspection? Is there a more practical way??

Sounds like the way you have to go. Its a pain but you only have to do it the once.

If it still has the Australian makers plates on it all of the info will be on there.

Hi Admin - if by the australian marker plates you mean the VIN plate, then yes it's on the trailer.

However, the Dept of Transport website says that I need the safety cert, weighbridge cert and a compulsory inspection by them.

If I have the VIN plate, do I still need to do all that? I mean all the info is already on the VIN plate!

Do you still have a copy of the old rego papers.? if so, that might do . But it will still have to be inspected though.

Im not sure of QLD but in NSW you are able to drive a car or tow a unregistered trailer ONLY to a place to get it registered ie. Mechanics for Blue Slip or RTA to get it registered. However it doesnt apply between towns or interstate for that you need a special thing from the RTA.

How big is the boat? I've done this before, by very carefully launching the boat (soaping up the rollers) onto the front lawn.. You can then winch the boat back onto the unhooked trailer whilst keeping everything soaped up or wet.

Mate its only a small 4.7m boat... but not too keen on launching the boat onto the lawn... i can just feel the worst happening... very inovative thou

You need a couple of foam mattresses for it to rest on, and a couple of trestles to keep it upright- it is much easier than you might think..
