baitcaster

g`day , i`m thinking of getting a baitcaster setup & was hoping to get one that could be used in both fresh & salt, being capable of throwing down to 1/8 perhaps , it will probably be going on a megabass phase 3 f3-67xs if i can get my hands on one.any thoughts?

Probly ur best option would be a Daiwa alphas r edition. They could throw down to 1/8 on the right rod. But I'd struggle for any distance. Either that or u could possibly look at one of the shimano dc baitcaster from Japan. The only thing I'd do with the alphas is upgrade the drag cos it pretty weak/ not over smooth

Like Scott said, typeR alphas or t3 if you want ease of use.
I still own a few typeR's which I've done a bit of work to, bearings and drag upgrades. They easily throw down to 1/12oz, and 1/16 on the right rod (EG Quadtwister). I recently had a good flick with a T3, one word: Awesome! Very smooth, easy to crank up the mag3D when the wind is up, salt safe, and nice low profile.

Alphas r edition
Clean it all out, regrease, abec 7 bearings with oust oil and carbontex drag with cals grease. And a nice light thin rod
Or spin reel

I was surprised. Recently purchased a zillion type r and a g loomis mossy back 10-14lb 6ft8 rod. Can throw a 1/6 jighead and 3 inch plastic quite easily on this combo and I thought I would of struggled considering how stuff the rod is

1 get a shallow finesse spool. 2 If you can find swiss bearings with 5 or 6 larger diameter balls rather than the 7+ that most bearings have then it will cast a lot further, the downside being you will get over-run really easily. 3 use a long rod with a fast taper and soft tip.

cheers guys, I'm not that worried about the very light stuff, as mention spin will cover that, I really just want a reel that will be salt friendly, what's the difference between the reel numbers, is it the same as spin, line capacity for example alphas 103 & 150??

These are kinda older numbering system. 150 is the biggest then 100 and 103 are the same in dia while 100 has more capacity. But these are different between reels, eg. a Zillion 100 spool is still bigger in dia than a Steez 100 spool.

The newer, RCS numbering shares the same system between reels. 1016 means it can hold 100m of 16lb line and 2020 means it can hold 100m of 20lb line, and they are interchangable between T3, Ryoga and Z. (But of course 10XX are not interchangable with 20XX)

The Z is a beast, though a bit heavy, and could not handle light stuff well unless you put a 2014 spool on it.

May I also suggest the Zillion J-Dream? The light weight tuned spool allows me cast down to a 1/16oz jighead with 2" baby shrimp. Actually I found it casting light stuff better than my Alphas and also built stronger and have more line capacity for saltwater purpose.

Definitely look at the J-Dream, very nice reels, I haven't used mine much yet as I'm waiting for jack season to come around but it casts long and is very smooth on the retrieve.
Had an Alphas R and didn't really like it so sold it.

Just stumbled across this reel
http://www.japantackle.com/Shimano/S...ebaran_BFS.htm

I've never heard of it until now but supposedly it is the only stock reel to be able to cast down to 2.5gram lures...

Have a look on tackletour.com and theres a review on the alphas custom finesse. From what I can remember it may be freshwater only

It is not the cheapest Alphas is it? Or u compare it with the R-Edition? Simply becos the R-edition or the ito is the most expensive Alphas.

The finesse custom is officially suggested freshwater only due to lack of CRBB, but it's not magnesium frame so could be used in saltwater with care or you change the bearings. Moreover, it would not be my pick. Generally, it's nothing special except the new spool and faster gear, and from what I heard the new spool just casts similarly as the old one. Finally, it's the heaviest Alphas (190g!, except Sol).

For saltwater purpose I would pick the original purple Alphas or the R-edition which have CRBB. Still, I would rate the Zillion J-Dream above them.
