Fuel usage

Hey guys,

Just after a rough idea here. I know these things depend on a load of factors such as the weather, how heavy you are on the throttle etc etc etc. BUT roughly for the guys who have tourny boats Im wanting to know what fuel guys go through who run boats such as small skeeters, nitro 640 or attacks etc with approx 90hp 4 stroke or optimax style motors.

Just trying to deside if the fuel will blow out much more than my current 50 4 stroke which obviously does not use much at all.

cheers
Jase

Don,t forget optimax will need to add oil cost also.
Not saying they use heaps but may need to consider it.

I have a V-Max 150 on my ProStrike and I get 2.5 km/l BEST. Usually around 2 km/l.

I have a Prostrike with a 150 etec and I am constantly surprised at how little fuel it uses.

Depends a bit on where you are, Mallacoota will use a bit 'coz you are always flogging around reasonably fast. Did 5 days fishing there a month back and used $100 of fuel.

Recently went to a 4 blade prop and that seems to have made a difference in fuel economy. Not so much top end, but cruises well at a tiny throttle opening.

Am also very impressed with my 200 Optimax at how fuel efficient it is for a motor of this size.

Can comfortably do 3 days at Mallacoota (practice + 2 comp days), running flat out up and down the system and get away with using less than a full tank.

Yes it will drink more than your 50 4 stroke, but those things can run off the smell of an oily rag so it's an unfair comparison

with my old 60 4 stroke, i could do, with an average fish in Lake Mac of speers point to wyee point, with stop/starts in between and back all on about 5000revs for between $15 and $25 a trip.

i ran my old 90 doing the same run, $20 - $30

now doing it with a 150 opti I do it for about $25 to $35 a trip.

the reason behind it (in my view) is the 60 took 30 min to do the run down to Wyee, the 90 took about 22min and the 150 15 min.

therefore the motor is running for less time, hence burn less fuel.

if i wanted to run at 6000revs all the time, well that may be a different story.

dont quote my figures as every trip was different. but use this as a rough guide.

i had a sticker on my 150 that read, "THIS BOAT DOES NOT RUN ON THANKS MATE" but started peeling off, maybe i should try looking for a one.

Tony

In any bass boat you can expect to pay between 20 and $50.00 bucks a sesh. It all depends on how much you travel ofcourse. Most of the new outboards are very good on fuel. If the cost of fuel is going to be a problem I wouldnt be looking at getting a bass boat. things like glass repairs, trailor repairs and electronics ungrades will cost you bigtime. Rego is more because you have a breaked trailor, service costs are a lot more, and insurance was doubble for me going from a 4.25 with a 40hp to a 18.9 with a 115hp. Then you have the massive difference in your cars fuel intake when traveling for a comp. It cost me more in extra fuel for the car because of the weight of the boat than it does for a day on the water.

Dont forget the special direct injection oil! thats $40-$50 for four litres and will last you like 4-8 trips (depending on how much fuel you use)

They cost you a heap of money, if you are palning on fishing comps it is only fair to expect your decky to chuck in. As said above all these costs that you cover and someone can just jump on your boat and say thanks mate at the end of the day. When I have gone as a decky I give the skipper money every time.

Just recently mine has cost me an easy $1,400.00 and now my electric is not working so theres some more down the drain. Thats life owning a bass boat.
Do yourself a favour and find a decky thats going to look after you, You dont work all week for them to go fishing on a nice boat.

Cheers
Chris

Make sure your new outboard is rated as close to a maximum rating for the hull as possible.

No good to have a 90HP pushing a 19.1 ft glass hull, as it would be:

a) hard on the engine, and
b) heavy on fuel

Do your homework first as some dealers put smaller engines on the higher rated hulls to make the cost of purchase more attractive to a buyer.

Whichever way you decide to go it would be more in fuel cost than your current 50HP 4 stroke for sure

Thanks heaps for the feed back guys. Bit to research before I jump into it. I dont pay for car fuel and company car is good tow car so thats no issue. And to be honest the $$$$ amounts you guys mentioned for a days fishing is fine. I was thinking id be in for a lot more than that. I use to run a 6m boat for game fishing with a 140 4 stroke so yeh......I know how quick the bloody costs of all the other extra's can add up. But hey.....its what we do lol.

thanks again all

cheers
