Line for 1000 size shimano.

Hey all, this has probably been covered numerous times. I have used the search function and didn't get a definitive answer.

So i have just purchased my first 1000 size shimano reel. A sustain FG to go on the 2-4lb ultra light black label. I am looking for a braid set up. I will mainly fish lightly weighted SPs, and blades on this combo however I may use it for top waters also.

Which break strain/brand braid would you go for on a 1000 size reel in which colour and why?

Cheers.

Awesome combo mate!!!!
I"ve used white 3 lb powerpro on a few different 1000 reels, cheap, way stronger than stated and performs great, good neutral colour once it gets a bit dirty which I reckon helps topwater stuff and can still see it easy....

What works for me is 5lb power pro in the yellow with a 5lb floro leader.

Thanks Matt I thought you might like that one! It looks the goods too!

I have run up to 10lb sunline PE on these rods with no problem but I wonder how 10lb would go on a 1000 size reel. I tried all size reels 1000, 2000 (daiwa) and 2500 and they all balanced nicely on this rod. Great rods and I am slowly stocking up on them in fear that the generation black is made to replace them at a cheaper price.

I will go feel up the 3lb power pro as you suggested mate.

Given that sp's and blades will be your main applications I would opt for braid over flouro. Not only wil braid will cast smoother than flouro, it will most importantly allow you to have contact with your lure at all times. I find that when I use flouro for plastics and especially blades it is a bit like having a rubber band between me and the lure, I'm sure there are alot of bites that go undetected. As for breaking strain and colour I would say you have two options. The first is to to go for the trusty fireline crystal. This stuff is 'invisible' in the water and breaks way above its suggest weight. 3lb fireline would be ample for what you want, go 2lb if your brave. The other option is to use a high quality pe line such as td sensor or sunline rockfish. Either of these braids in 6lb would be suitable. They are both flouro orange which helps when identifying bites through your line.
In the end which way you go is up to personal preference. A lot of people have a negative image of fireline though others swear by it, tbh i couldn't be bothered with all that debate. Give each a go and see what works for you Good luck
Cheers, Oli

I have 3 x 1000 size reels and I have 6 lb Sunline PE on two of them, in the bright fluro colour and 10 lb Castaway on the other, in the standard pale blue colour.

I like the bright fluro green colour as it stands out well when I'm fishing with SP's. It's crucial to be able to see where you line is and what it's doing. I like to use the blue Castaway when I'm fishing with surface lures, as it's hard to see from under the water and should spook the fish less (I hope so, at least).

Cheers Oli.

Definitely going braid for the reasons you mentioned. I have used the fireline crystal before. I actually run 1lb a fair bit when in the kayak and for the money I like it. Haven't used the 2lb but I'm sure I'd like it too. 4lb and over I hated and there are better options for me.

I will sus out the other brands u mentioned.

Thanks for your input, really appreciate it.

Cheers.

Thanks windknot. I really like the sunline braid. I haven't used the castaway though. Is there any special considerations with this line in particular on a 1000 size reel?

Cheers.

I know you can get the silver thread here, and you should be able to get the varivas.

TBH I think most of the braid that we see in shops here is crap. You can't get any decent 2-6lb braids. Most of them are twice as thick if not more, than they should be, and break way above their rating.

I will have a look around stella fella and see if I can find it. I'd rather take my time and find something decent. Thanks for your advice.

4LB Fireline is awesome, not tooth floss like, casts well, strong. Was talking to Steve Parker he recons it is one of the best braids out there. 6LB super PE is great too much better than 8LB version.

I'm a big fan of 4lb Frog PE. You can get it from Amazon Outdoors online store.
cheers!
