Cool Surface Fun

Ive had a couple of cracker sessions last couple of mornings using a scumdog and a px45. Both fairly subtle surface lures. I wasnt pausing much just winding medium speed and shaking the rod slightly. Bream clobbered them.

I noticed how much faster you can scout an area (because you dont have to wind so slow and pause like crankbaiting). The bream see the surface disturbance and investigate. You can see all the action. To be honest it made crankbaiting seem a bit boring.

I can see that bream would not go for them in all conditions but when they are responding to them, its addictive.

All up I caught and released 16 bream and 3 flathead in 4 hours. Plus loads of near misses. Devastated by a beast that did a 10m run to the snags, I turned it and had it out in the open (should have backed off the drag) it took one last run and ping! the leader near the lure gave way. Lost scumdog and trophy bream. Aaaaggghhhhh!!!!

Thats the challenge that keeps us coming back I guess.

Hey,

Funny, must be a northern rivers thing. I had a cracking surface/ stick minnow session on the day of the full moon just at the top of tide as it turned. It was sunny, no wind and bream were smashing prawns everywhere, some of the prawns were swimming to the boat to hide and were being smashed at my feet. The session was red hot, but as soon as the run really kicked in it was all over.

Cheers,

Yeah stomp, I know what your saying, we had a great surface session, easter monday but on the following thursday they went nuts, middle of the day, bright and sunny we nailed a cricket score of bream with over 30 legals from 27 to 32 cm all on surface, no monsters but a ton of fun.
Cheers

Hey Pip when their in the mood you'll be blowen out what size surface lures they'll hit. Our last surface sesh we were getting them on dog x and bassday sugarpens anything smaller they wern't interested. Other times when their timid and the surface is quiet we will have to down size to Smith towadis.
Cheers

Ok. Yeah, this morning was very tranquil.

Do you tie heavy nylon straight to the lure? I read somewhere to use 15lb mono tied hard to the lure. Helps tracking???

I've owned an atomic K9 pup for awhile now but never really used it until this morning. I was fishing somewhat of an old oyster pen in the Swan, and thought this would be a good opp to try it out. I had a blast using it! Although I was getting more interest with a slow retrieve. I saw a swirl behind, so stopped the lure, about 7 secs later I see that tiny head dip under and I strike. Not a massive fish, and I just dropped it in the clear, but very exciting nonetheless! Will have to try again tomorrow I think!
