Changing jigs or to hard bodies

When changing rigs, I usually just cut the line and re-rig on the same leader until it gets about 40-50cm is that ok?

I don't see why 40 -50 cm's is bad but i always try and keep my leader around the 1.5 m mark.
I fish area where its basically just full of barnicle crusted pylons and everyfish i've caught takes me around at least one(as i'm usually fishing from the shore.)
I also use a fly clip made by mustad which stops the problem of tying new knots each time i throw on a new lure.These little clips are pretty cool ,dont change the action of hardbodies and are fine for jigheads!
anyway i think leader size is personal and representative of where you fish ie.round flats,pylons,leases,rocks ect.

That's the reason I start with a fairly long leader - at least 1+ rod lengths.

If you get it a bit nicked or snagged you can just tie on another jig, without having to re-do the while thing.

I can get though most of a session that way.

Yep, I'm with Dave there. Tie it on a bit longer than you really want - nothing worse than stopping mid session and deciding you need to tie a new leader.

I start at around 2-2.5mtrs and then use it til its down to around a metre or just under, then tie a new one on. Loose a few jigs here and there, a couple of hard to soft changes and you`ve lost nearly a metre or so. Just depends how much you enjoy doing knots. But at least 2 metres to start with.

richo- I do enjoy doing knots for some reason. The uni knot is the way to go, it is used from my fireline to mono and leader to jig

Seems like I'm the odd one out so far. I don't use leader and go straight to fireline using a no.1 Shogun clip. Not lost a fish so far to freyed fireline.

That's one of the reasons I use a slightly softer rod. Let the rod do all of the work, not the leader.

The Shogun clips I use are fairly small and black, which seems to be an advantage. So far in the comps it hasn't made a huge difference and the same around Perth waters.

You guys have got me thinking, might give it a try on my spare rod to see if there is a difference.

Still, 2.24kg at the Albany comp tells me it can't be too bad. Still, I'd be curious to see how many of the guys above me use clips.

Wouldn't you know it. After all the talk I deceided not to use clips for the first time. I fished with Richo who deceided to use clips for a change.

I missed out and he landed one. Go figure

Hey Bear I use clips most of the time. I like to swap my hardbodies around a fair bit (untill I start catching them) and a clip make it heaps quicker, but then if I stick to a certain lure I loose the clip. I caught all my fish in Albany with a clip on the leader. People say the it affects the lure's action but I have only found a few brands to do this (no names on here)

I use about 1.5-2m of leader but I have a spare spool with a leader on it so when I loose a rig I wack it on and bingo, fishing again in no time.

I'm the same Craig. I start with approx 2 metres of leader and carry a spare spool with a leader already tied on. I am considering looking at some clips though, as I tend to change colour patterns fairly quickly until I find one that works. retying a lure knot several times is a pain in the ass, and it shortens up the leader fairly quickly.

What clips do you use guys ???

I use "no knot fast snaps" that I shipped in from Cabelas. These are very strong stainless fly clips that are ideal for softplastics and small hardbodies. I use the medium or large size and have never had one let go on a fish or during a cast. Their tiny size and light weight makes them ideal for bream fishing. I wish someone would stock them here!

I usually just cut the lure off, check the line for any scratches and then tie another on.

I use about 2 meters & use it down to about a meter or so. I don't use clips myself as I haven't seen any I like but I would give them a go if I saw a suitable one.
