surface lure tricks???

hey guys
have been having a really frustrating run on surface lures lately. each session i get a few follows and hits but cant seem to get any solid hook ups even though i would say some of the hits are pretty aggressive. i know this happens a fair bit when surface fishing but was wondering does anyone have any little tricks that has worked for them to improve hook up rate?

Mate, if you find they are hitting your lure but not getting and solid hook ups on the pause, try to slowly draw the lure forward with your rod making the rear treble swing up/stickout. You will find they hit it dead on the treble, as it sticks in there face. Remeber just move it forward slowly though.

Another trick people put to good use but I'm yet to give a run is to attach ZX hooks to there surface lure. Would work on a timid bite.

Hope this helps for you mate.

Yeah, have heard attaching ZX hooks works really well as they actually bite the hooks themself!

Add an extra split ring on the back so the lure sits lower down in the water. Also downsize treble to like a 12 or 14, a sticky treble like the decoy YS25s is a good choice.

Know what you mean it can be so frustrating at times they just want to throw the pencil round like they are performing at seaworld. Not sure what lures you are using but some of the pencils sit near vertical and others are more horizontal like the nw pencils which are my favourite. Make sure your hooks are sharp and plenty of long pauses especially after you have had a hit keeping the lure in the strike zone for as long as possible.Sometimes when you give the lure a little wiggle with the rod tip it makes them strike.I gave the zx hooks a bit of a go but had no luck as hooks got tangled with the treble but give it a go your self it may work.Hope this may help.

cheers...Roy

zx hooks, they'll swing around a bit when the fish hit the lure and it may just pin them, failing that & as the other guys have said, a small twitch/downward jerk of the rod just to get the lure to move ever so slightly sometimes will get the fish to hit and stay connected

I use ZX hooks a lot on blades and I have lost a few very good fish on them, I find you dont get a good hook up very often and can pull hooks easily.
If I am fishing topwater it is over weeds or rocks and I really cant afford to let the fish run forever so I dont pull hooks. I just put on smaller trebbles.

I find surface always has poor hook up to bite ratio and I just put up with it.
If they want it they will keep hitting it until they get it.

Cheers
Chris

They do tend to miss a fair bit, I just keep working it until they get pissed off then eventually smack it, and never jerk it

well said thats what i do and my hook up rate is way better then when i first started the top water fishing. but instead of drawing the rod tip i slowly wind!

Despite his user name (Mr Nofish) i think he was on the mark with a slow draw or wind that hangs the treble out off the tail of the lure.

Perhaps the second split ring and a No 12 Decoy would help also.

I myself have a better conversion on lures that sit tail down not horizontal, and found a very low conversion on the NW Pencil compared to the Sammy 65 in the same colour.

Mick.

i double split ring the back on sammys and use a size 14 decoy in rear and a 12 decoy on the front seems to work

Plenty of different tactics out there. I find each day different. some days the bream are just crazy and hook up rate is great some days they hang low, on those days I try to fish SLOOOW often just letting the lure hang there for a bit, sometimes this can get that bite.

Have also noticed that if you are getting heaps of hits and no hookups, that changing to a smaller lure can be helpful, but you will get the smaller fish aswell.

Don't know about the trailing hooks , I reckon the tangles will drive you crazy (crazier). Each to thier own.
