Cranking for yellows??
Hi guys,
I have got the soft plastics down and all, but now I want to get some yellows on hardbodies. Anyone got any tips? not any particular lure or brand just a technique for the suspending or slow floaters (slim profile). I'm fishing around boat hulls and wharfs and pylons that sort of structure. The closest I have got was with an X-rap 04 just twitching it with pauses and that seemed to get some attention. Any help would be much appeciated .

Hey mate, get a few cheap crankbaits eg atomic, cast next to stucture or edges, let it sit for about five seconds before starting your retrieve.
Wind slowly and before long BANG your on. Haha cheers stealth |

Every day can be different, some days they'll climb all over it and you'll be on, other days you can be slow winding and they'll tap it 3-5 times before they actually commit to taking it. Just keep winding slowly.

Depends on how you are fishing the hardbodies, no real need to strike when slow rolling crankbaits like chubbies, atomic cranks, cranka cranks etc, just a lift of the rod tip when you feel the weight.

pretty well explained above. i think start with a crank style hb such as an atomic, berkley, chubby or cranka. these are all super easy to use. just cast em into a fishy looking spot and very slowly wind it back in, they generally hook themselves and a natural reaction to getting a bite is to lift the rod so you prob will set the hook as a reaction to feeling weight. you can add pauses and twitches but slow roll works very well

Just a slow roll will get you fish, hardbodies were all i used when i first started chasing bream, i didn't have any confidence in SP so i didnt use them much. Cast along the side of moored boats and slow roll them back underneath them, you can chuck in acouple pauses and twitches but generally a slow roll is all thats needed. Don't set the hook, just wind the fish on.

If you want to crank hulls you have the option of going with a mid crank or a deep. I prefer to use a deep crank for hulls. Look for hulls that are in areas that alow you to fish both the bottom and the hull itself at the same time, they can really be gold mines at times. Im not saying that fishing hulls in 12 foot of water wont pay off, they definately will if you get it all going the way they like it.
I use Atomic 38 cranks in the deep diving style, colors vary depending on water color and what bait is around. I also use Jackall Chubbies in a few colors. Shrimp patterns, AYU's and some lighter colours will do the job for most times. Remember that they all dive to different depths and that makes a huge difference in some casses. If you decide to go to a bank you really need to have the lure tapping the bottom. You dont want it hooking up on weed every 2 secconds but just touching the tops of the weed or rocks. Atomics are good for this as they swim with their tails up and the hooks dont foul on the weed as much. Its not just the bottom you want to be hitting, I try to bump any pice of structure I cast at, not so much hulls but docks and pontoons can get good results when the bream hear the lure hit the structure they go looking for it if they are not too skittish on the day. If you are fishing rocks you might want to go with a floating lure (no hard and fast rule but helps), I say this because you want your lure to hit the rocks but not get stuck in them every time. The boyancy will allow the lure to float out of the rocks that you are hitting when they get a bit stuck, Just give a little jiggle and wham your lure is back. If you are fishing hulls and the bite is slow you may need to let the lure sit in one spot for a bit, this is when a susspending crank is dynamite. You can also fish floating cranks in a similar fashion by doing what I call a Slow draw, Just stop the crank and slowly draw it down with your rod tip at the same time. Have a look at the crank next to your boat and you will work it out. Looks more like its struggling to swim rather than dead. Just wanted to add, If you see a rocky bank getting hammered by the wind, That is your bank! Big MFs love that I hope this helps Cheers Chris Last edited by Bobby Bass; 22-12-2011 at 04:15 AM. |
