Are the shimano rareniums any good.

http://www.tackletester.com/2009/05/...arenium-reels/
I had a play with a 2500 rarenium today at the tackle store and I loved it. It was very similar to the Stradic ci4 but it felt smoother and tighter.
anyone used one yet.

I have one although I really dont have any experience with other high end reels to compare it to, although I'm very happy with it and have heard alot of others are too, including Steve Starling. and if you look on shimano's australian site they claim 10kg of drag for the current rarenium 2500 and 4000,it balances my nitro ultrabream 6'6 quite well right on the front grip (and exactly the same on the distance spin),and if it really does have that much drag as you have 2 spools, it can easily serve a couple of different rod's,did the one you played with have the round foam handle knob?

Yes, very nice.

Like a more refined Stradic Ci4.

Thanks guys.

Yes it did have the round foam knob.

I actually had a play with a few reels that day which where , Stradic fj , ballistic , freams and the Emeraldas.
IMHO I thought the Rarenium was the best and the ballistic second.
The rarenium was so much smoother then my Stradic ci4 with no handle play at all.
I had to pull my Stradic apart and re shim the bearings which helped heaps.

The guy at the tackle store told me because the rarenium was made for the Japanese market it was made to a much higher standard and it's very clear whern you play with it.

I have two 2500 and love them, teamed with St Croix spinning rods. Got them at a great price from a non-sponsor. PM me for details.

Doesnt that suck! Japanese have all the fun stuff and were sent the dreg's...

Good to see that the Rarenium is a good touch above the CI4, I've heard so so so many bad review's about the Ci4 reels and have put one to the flex test myself and walked away a bit confused...

They are awesome, it just comes down to basically wether you want a lighter reel -Rarenium- or a heavier one -Stradic FJ-
I went the FJ cause it balances my rod very nicely!!

I also passed up the rarenium for a new Stradic FJ.

Partially because I have several other Stradic reels (FH & FI) and have been totally happy with them as a reel. Also got a great price on one locally as well.

Hmmmm that's what I was thinking about my rod.
The perfect weight is about 230 grams and the 2500 rarenium are 200 grams.
The ballistic would have been perfect but I feel the rarenium is a little better built.

i picked a white caldia over the rarenium as it 'felt' better in the shop - marginally

out of the box the caldia was much nicer, however over the long term, i reckon the rarenium will outlast the caldia

rarenium has 2 spools which is a bonus

rod balance may play a factor as mentioned so tinker with the rods you are going to strap the reel on as that may help make up your mind !

anyone knows any difference btw those selling in the Jap market and in the Aussie market? Cause the model over there is 2500S and also the price difference as well. What does the S mean? Any ideas?

Yes. Jules is right, 'S' = Shallow Spool.
