Help Broken rod!

Hey guys i borrowed a fly rod off my cousen in which it broke in the boot and i baught him another one to make up for it and any way im goin to try to fix his old one.
It broke from the bottom half where it joins the top half and now the top bit wont fit over the bottom bit.
Is there any way i could like put a bit of metal rod or something through the middle???
i tried a antena because it goes from thin to to thick and it fits in both ends snug but it dosnt feel sturdy anough and im sure it would break again.
Any help woulld be really great

Hi Dagga

I really don't like the idea of you putting an old piece of antenna inside the blank, it will cause another break, most probably from pressure point loading i.e. it won't flex the same as the rod blank.

If this is an expensive rod that is worth getting fixed then i'm sure you would have a rod builder/tackle store in your area that could help.

So I guess that you could consult the yellow pages or perhaps one of our members knows someone that could help you.

Whereabouts in Vic are you?

I seem to recall that you live in the Gippsland region?

I live in Ballarat close to Melbourne.
The rod is worth about $100 and is Graphite.
I carnt afford to pay too much to fix it now that i forked out $100 to buy him a new one and now im goin to have to pay my dad off for the next month putting me behind a month and a half on the fly rod i was goin to get for my self.

Being 14 it isnt easy to get that kind of money!

i sell the sunday times( perth newspaper) every saturday night and i normally make a bout $30 for a couple of hours

, just enough to pay for most of my fishing gear and phone cards

ahh good news i worked out a way that looks like it will work with the help of my uncle we put a piece of metal rod in the fly rod but we didnt make it go too far down the fly rod soo it still able to flex all the metal is for is just to like join the 2 together and we left a gap of about a inch where the 2 pieces join and the metal is exposed and filled it with fiber glass then im goin to go over the top of the fiber glass and up and down the fly rod with that stuff that they use to fix the guides with.
The cotton and the glue stuff.

What u think???????
its hard to explain properly but yeh it looks good i just wont give it a real thrashing when casting but i think it would be safe to use it normally.

you are better off to use wood dowel or a manufactured rod joiner. The metal from the broken antenna will probably cause a point load that will break the rod again just above or below the steel insert.

i didnt end up using a antena lol just using it as a first try example and yeh i knew that it might break where the metal rod stop that why i used as little length of rod i could to make it strong and the idea is that there wont be alot of bending in that little section of the rod???????

Ahh yeh that didnt come out right i ment metal rod but still its a springy type of metal so hopefully it will bend with the rod if it needs to oh and i got told maybe i should try a piece of a old fishing rod but its too late to try that now soo yeh if it breaks again ill give it a try.
Or u reckon i should sand the fibre glass away and try to start again with a bit of old rod to make the joint?????

Dagga if you can, it would be good to find a part of graphite rod you can place over the snap. make a sleve, this is because it should flex the same (being graphite not metal) if you use metal the stress arcoss the metal area will concentrate at both ends of the rod, and hence snap again.

The graphite should still flex taking some of the stress out of the join. Its not perfect and will effect the blank but it will work while you save for a good rod.

I snapped my spin rod

didn;'t even get to use it and fixed it this way. It works fine now (not as good as the replacment but good spare rod for the kayak)
