Calais 200 asv water intrusion

Hi Guys and Gals,
I am in the process on upgrading my curado 200e5 for a Calais 200asv not the dc model. The main concern I have been told from a few people who have owned or own the Calias is that it has a major water intusion problem and have to virtually have to strip the reel down after every use to keep it operational. I would use the reel virtually 100% in saltwater and was wondering if the information I have been told is over exageration our should I be looking for another reel.
Any or all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The target species I mainly chase are Barramundi, Mangrove Jacks and King Salmon.
Thanks in advance Rob

The Calais 200 series are tough as nails. I use my DC7 in salt frequently, no problems there. I think you may have read about salt going through the holes in the spool, it may happen if you use braid with no backing. I suggest some tape, then you can be sure that no salt will get through the drilled holes.

I JUST finished servicing my Calais DC about 3 Minutes ago. After a hunch that some water had gotten into it i wasn't surprised to find it full of salt water dropplets in the gears and interior. Was VERY dissapointed. Its running like a dream now though, just have to get some fish on it. Mind you i have caught alot of fish on it, but has never seen salt spray or and heavy contact with salt water, only sprayed with the mist setting on the hose and wiped down thoroughly.

Iss a squid,
Do you think that those hosing with a fine mist pushed the salt further into your reel?

Try not to hose your reels with a hose as it can force water and salt through little gaps. I always give my reels a light 5 second warm shower, then wipe them down with a soft cloth. It is all about maintaining your reel, if you don't take care of it, then don't be surprised when something goes wrong.

i have a calais 201asv, purchased from this forum last year that has copped a fair smashing here in darwin in some pretty bad conditions.
i've used this reel fishing in the last wet season, which was the highest recorded rain fall for darwin in years, with no moisture getting inside.
i've even dropped the reel into the saltwater, more like it got ripped out of my hand by something when i was sculling a beersky. managed to grab it a mini-sec after it went splash, no h20 intrusion then either, although the drag was at max.

not a lot of ppl can destroy calais to be honest probably apart from a few well known gear wreckers on this site.

if you can get salt inside a calais you can get salt into any reels mate. i serviced my calais every 6months and i gotta service pixy/alphas every trip/second trip.
