Popping for whiting.

Hey guys i was just wondering if the whiting will still be going for poppers in winter? I have never caught a whiting on the surface and would love to give it a go, so yea i was just wondering if the winter whiting still take them and what everybodys favourite surface lures are for these awesome fish??

Yeh winter is the go for them, well up my way anywhere. They are bluked up in the winter. Keep the retrieve pretty constant, keep it moving at about 1 bloop per second. But dont pause it. I use Rebel Pop-R's (45mm) and Clear strike pro's (50mm)

where i live you would get more success in summer when they move on the flats to spawn. only ever got 1 whiting on a pooper and the lure was a R2S bubble pop 35, however there are other lures such as the stiffy popper that catch plenty of whiting. also try stickbaits like Jaz Zappa's and the like when the conditions are super calm

Depends where you are. I find the warmer months far more productive using this method.

just a theory of mine but they see a larger bait so hit it harder than usual allowing max hook penetration. would also get the bigger ones interested

Sammy 65 and zipbait skinny pops. Just a med-fast constant walk should get them chewing. My biggest whiting at 42cm did take a skinny pop on the pause chasing bream though so if constant ain't working then mixing it up won't hurt.

The only whiting that i've caught in the surface fell to a stiffy popper in rack attack (it was fowl hooked through the back because the trebles couldn't fit in its mouth).
I've tried other poppers like the R2S bubble pop 35 and others but no result.

I clicked onto the whiting on poppers recently , more of a summer thing in my area.

I did notice I had much more success in very shallow water ,depth seems to be a key factor, for me knee deep is too deep , you still pull them but they seem to follow more than hit .

Great fun , we get nice Yellow Fin during the warmer months , glad I stumbled onto them last year.
