Fireline loops

Hi,

Wondering if any of you can help - I use a small Pfleuger Trion 1000 reel and it throws a birdsnest fairly regularly. If I spot a loose loop before I cast, I can pull it out, but sometimes a loop goes and I have a bunch of B#@st%rds in the runners.

Dave,
All you can really do is keep an eye on the line and once in a while, chuck out a cast and hold the line to get it back on tight. I have found this is worse on smaller reels as the 2x30 series Okuma reels I have very rarely do this. I've only had a few since the Symetre I purchased and must admit, this throws a lot less than some I've seen.

I'm not familiar with the reel, but first thing to ask yourself - is the reel suited for brained, gelspun lines, etc?

If so, start looking at:
* is your line roller moving properly and laying the line down tight?
* is there 'too much' fireline on your spool? (having your spool filled to the lip can produce regular birds nests - personally, I try keeping the level/amount of Fireline at around 2mm from the lip)
* maybe the Fireline wasn't put on tight enough on the initial spooling? (I got a store to re-spool one of mine and it came off and went on so much better).

That's all I can think of at the moment...

Hi granpop

hoping this helps:

I have a Pflueger Trion 4725 and it doesn't throw loops on me. The 4725 is the size of a stradic 1000 so it may be the same reel. I did note that Pflueger state the line should only be spooled up to 3mm from the edge of the spool, I originally spooled at 2mm from the edge and got loops so I removed some of the backing to pull the line back and it now casts a treat without loops.

12 months ago I was the loop king, havn`t thrown one for at least 9 months now, main thing is to (as Bear said) keep an eye on the spool, you`ll see potential loops before they are thrown. Or look to see what your doing that puts the loops on.

Things to check, where the line is sitting after your cast (before you start your first crank), that could be loop No1 then when you crank some bad casts in and your softie or hard skips over the surface - every skip is a loose loop (potential danger and birdnest material) But if you keep an eye on it you`ll notice what it is your doing that is causing the loops, slight variation and you could be laughing. Thats whatI did, and they were the 2 changes I made, and now no more loops.

cheers

this is the reel I have - Pflueger Trion 4725 - As suggested check to make sure that the line roller isn't seized as it will create line twist

My tip....don't crank the handle over after a cast..do it by hand, This has definatelt decreased the number of loops!

Thanks for comments people - it IS a Pfleuger 4725, so first thing tomorrow, I will remove enough backing to drop the level of fireline to 3mm down the spool, and see how that goes. I use and Okuma Avenger AV20 as my 8lb outfit and it works like a charm. I like the feel of the Trion as my small outfit, but the loops were getting to me.

Cheers all, and again - THANKS

Dropped the backing down 1mm so there is now approx 3mm lip with a full spool and the loops problem has disappeared.

Happy fishing again

no probs!

Hi Dave

good to hear that the advice worked. I found it strange that Pflueger recommend 3mm as most reels go for 2mm but then again 1/8th of an inch as recommended by others is as good as 3mm. It doesn't appear to have affected my casts, yet again the casting is probably more a function of Mims graphite USA rod. Mim has let me use it quite a bit and I can really belt a 1/16th jig with it. I still remember my first cast with the rod as I landed the jig about 1 inch from my target at 20 feet then pulled a fish, moments like that are just magic.

i think its been about 5 months since ive had a wind knot/fireline knot but if i rig up the rod right now a certain way, i betcha i can give myself a wind knot in a few casts.. what ive found is, you tend to get more loop knots if you have a really long leader, if im using a 7ft rod or 6'6.. i keep my leader about 4ft long MAX because i find that if you put even one wrap of the leader on the spool of your reel, the knot will grab a loose loop of fireline and twig it just enough to spiral out and cause a knot over a few casts.. so if you can keep your leader shorter then you think u need, then you might solve your problem

ok besides the ways to prevent it
the best way to get a loop out is if you have a mate to help.

pull the entire loop off the reel by pulling the end of the line rather than the loop and then get yer mate to grab the end of the loop and slowly pull on it
keep the two ends of yer line seperated wide in each hand and the loop with magic away!

but as they say prevention is better than the cure!!
