Where do i start?????

First Hello to all,

I have only just found this site and it is fantastic. I've had an itch to catch a BREAM on a lure for a while but have little idea where to begin. Yeah i've read numerous stories in the various mags but when i have a question no one can answer it in a reasonable time frame. But with this site the questions can be answered by those in the know.

I live in the Wollongong area (approx 90km south of Sydney) and was wondering if anyone in cyber land can give me some idea of where I could kick off my Bream adventure. I have an idea of tackle, lures etc but should I fish along weed beds, rock walls, pylons or the open flats. Also after casting should I close the bail arm and let the lure (soft plastic) sink on a tight line and what after that little flicks and a slow retrieve or a steady retrieve with no flicks???????????????????????????????????????????

welcome aboard,this is a great site to learn about breaming.
Unfortunately that itch to catch a bream will become an obsestion.
Mate im from WA so i cant give you any ideas where to go but find a river,estury or inlet find a snag throw a SP or HB at it and your half a chance of catching a bream.
Sounds easy but once your hooked up hang on its a great ride.
As for your question on softies if you flick the bail arm to early the lure will arc away from the snag let it drop for a little time so it will drop strait down in front of the snag the odd twitch wont hurt to intice a strike.
After a while you will pick up where each lure works best.

Mate are you land based or have a boat?
If you landbased like me, i find that when i target bream i look for stucture like bridges,jetties,rock walls, marines.
Now when it comes to casting i find that i let the SoftPlastic hit the bottom before i close the bail arm only if the bottom is sand based or dosent have many rocks.
If the bottom is very rocky i find that after i have casted i closed the bail arm and hold the rod up high and give a slit flick,and just before it hits the bottom reel in alittle to give it some height and do the same again, trying not to get snaged.
Retrieve is up to yourself,i give a few side flicks then let the S.P settle wait and the start again, it just depends on the botom, different courses for different horses.

Ruggie it's easy to give you advice - but the best way to do it is just get out there and start spinning.

Mix things up a bit if you're not having luck, vary retrieve speeds and styles, let the jig hit the bottom with long pauses - the key is to persevere. Many of the guys and gals on here took quite a while to land their first one, but once you get the knack watch out, it's truley addictive

Guys, thanks for the tips.

I'll try the things that you suggested and i'll get back to you in the near future.

Snag at present i'm land based but trying to scrape together some cash for a boat. (Bloody mortages)
