Looking for a New S/W Baitcaster..
Looking for a new baitcaster for S/W use.
Planning to chuck it around mangroves, rock walls etc for some of your larger Saltwater species such as Jacks and Salmon. Want to be able to cast small bream minnows like Double Clutched, Jackall Colt etc easily - as this would be the style of lures I plan to use the most. I have put aside my previous dislike of the Daiwa Zillions in the hopes that the new Daiwa Zillion R Edition just may be able to prove me wrong. I have had a feel of one of these and they are sooo smooth! ![]() - And feels very well built. Secondly is a Daiwa Alphas R Edition which I was originally planning to get until my order did not go threw? Thirdly is the Shimano Chronarch D7. So to sum it down, for the style of fishing I have mentioned above which of the following do you think will best suit; - Shimano Chronarch D7101 - Daiwa Alphas R Edition 103L - Daiwa Zillion R Edition 100L Thanks. |

Shimano Core is Freshwater only.
I know with editionaly care it can be possible. But don't want to go through all the drama with maintaining it etc. |

If you like the round reels, look at the Shimano Calcutta Conquest. If you like low profile reels, Scorpion 1000/1001XT, Calais 100a/Antares AR. Last edited by DaiwaFreak; 02-05-2011 at 08:46 AM. |

Have you experienced using a Core in Salt? As I've been interested in one for quite some time now. Not a fan of round baitcasters. Only looking at spending around $400. Which mean the Calais is out of the price range. Is it fair to to say the Scorpian is just a Japanese version of the Curado? Like the Metanium is to the Chronarch? Or is there a better build to the JDM models? |

Here is a review for the Core 100, as Tackletour says, it is saltwater safe. I'd go for the 50 Size though, much nicer for casting the lighter stuff. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewshimanocore.html Well, there are some differences between some JDM and USDM models, really depends on the model. Core 100 (USDM) is similar to the Metanium MG (JDM), but... -Metanium has the availability of a higher gear ratio (MG7) -Metanium has 8+1 bearings while Core 100 only has 4+1 bearings -Core comes in Pitch and Flipping Version. Core 50 (USDM) is pretty much identical to the Aldebaran MG (JDM), but the Aldebaran comes with the option of the higher gear ratio. Scorpion XT 1000/1001 is very similar to the Curado 50/51E, but... -The scorpion has no anti reverse pawl, while the curado does -Scorpion has S-ARB's while the Curado has 1 S-ARB and the rest are SS bearings. |

Ok, thanks for sorting that out. Still un-sure if I want to buy from PLAT. What is the delivery time like, a few weeks or so? Have anyone lost an order through delivery from PLAT. If so, did you get coverage? Sorry for the Questions, don't want to lose the order, only to find out I'm not covered. @Bkingaby ; I have been told the finesse is the same as a basic Alpha just with a pimped coating and a 100 size spool. @ Sammy ; Not too keen on the round Profile reels. I did a search on the Zillion only to realise it has a 7kg drag which means it would be more versatile then my Curado in heavier fish. But how would it go casting smaller lures like mentioned? Would I be able to fit a 103 size spool on a Zillion R for better distance? |

have ordered from plat numerous times,
they've been really helpful even getting me things that aren't even on the website, delivery has usually been within a week (to perth) and never lost a thing yet from at least 20 orders

Look at the Scorpion 1000/1001 XT mate, it has the lighter spool to cast lighter lures with ease (probably around 3g absolute minimum with the correct rod), and you can go lighter if you upgrade the bearings. It also has the balls to handle the larger fish, and its body is sooooo comfortable to palm. It's also fully saltwater capable and it won't break the bank. The Zillion IMO is overpriced, and a little out of date. Also from my personal experience, it isn't that durable in the salt. |

Mate IMO what you are asking for are a bit too tough for an out of box baitcast reel in that price range and the properties you are asking for are a bit contrasting to themselves.
![]() You want big drag, line capacity, but able to cast light weight lures easily. That is just like asking for a snapper rod to cast tiny bream/trout lures or an ultra light bream/trout rod to have the power to handle a kingie... ![]() Look at what Kev has caught, and what he was using. But for sure his pixy has been tuned / mod. / and upgraded. This maybe what you want. http://www.breammaster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37142 As I said before you won't find anything to be perfect in having contrasting properties. There must be some sort of trade off. If not, that would be a dream reel. Even Imakatsu has to have different combos to suit different situations. Most of them are all Aurora but with different spools and brake modifications and upgrades. And have to mention, different rods. Enjoy. |
