Myth Busters - rusting hooks.

Has anyone ever tested how long it takes for a hook to rust in your local waters.

I've heard they rust out in a couple of days/weeks.

My plan is to take 9 different water samples. Starting at the fresh and ending at the bay. Then drop an owner st/11 treble in each sample and watch for rust.

If anyone has ever tried this test - let me know and save me a Pack of owners.

You should consider taking a wife and making some babies you seem to have way to much spare time .

There's already too many young smart-arses out there - why add to the problem

Great idea, very interested in the findings. If you have a spare hook drop it in in a glass of coke.

Why, just because!

Make sure you test gang hooks, ive caught fish with barnicles growing on them. Id imagine that would take... at least 2-3 weeks?

Ive caught tailor before with gangs hanging out of it, Caught a bream once with a hook that it had taken down deep. Who ever cut it off left 30cm of trace out its mouth. I snipped it as close as i could and it swam off happier then ever

Problem is people who use heavy duty hooks some of which are not designed to corrode. I'm guilty there with kings sometimes and it's a problem I need to rectify

puting a hook in a cup of saltwater is hardly a test, like putting sugar in a cup of cold water, dosn't dissolve, think wave action, tidal movement, swimming, or in the case of the sugar, stirring.

I'm aware the test isnt ideal - but its as close as I can get with limited resources

I had considered leaving the hooks at 9 different locations but checking them was more effort than I was willing to put in

Great idea Larry, would be curious as well. Your biggest issue would probably be volume if water. I'm not sure butfrom very basic (read high school) understanding of chemistry. A cup may not have enough corrosive reactants (word?) to dissolve the hook. Nonetheless would be very interested in your findings.
