I would say a Sol 3000, even though the Sol is more expensive. The stradic is a very tough little reel, it can punch well above it's weight. Sol's are nice when they are new, but after some punishment, problems begin to occur.
Here is a Sustain 3000 catching a sailfish!!!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWukSEMScf4 The stradic has less bearings than the sustain, but its pretty much the same reel. Last edited by DaiwaFreak; 18-03-2011 at 01:16 AM. |

Shimano will last longer with very little problems.
Daiwa are a little bad on the durability sides of things. I guess it depends on how well you treat your reels. Not to start an argument but th Ci4 would probably be the best options for the price range. A 4000 size Ci4 is 280g. The same weight as a 2500 Sol... Despite how good Shimano are, I for some reason choose Daiwa.. I guess it's a personal preference? |

depends what feels best when attatched to the rod. im a daiwa man so i'd say a sol or heartland but really at that level you cant go wrong. although i will say that im not a fan of the ci4's. every single one i've picked up has felt like crap. having said that ive heard they improve after use so guess it depends on your own preferences

i think the ci4 will have more drag in comparisson to daiwa reels in the same range of the same size.

sol 3000
I have the stradic ci4 4000 and a sol 3000, similar size, stradic more drag and higher retrieve rate, sol less flex in the reel, both very nice.

It would have the be heartlands, based on price but the sol based on performance. I own a Sol and a Stradic and reckon they are not far apart on features but I would say the stradic is better value for money. Not just considering the outlay at the time of purchase, but now years on, how much better the stradic is faring comapred to my Sol.
In the mid-price range reels you have highlighted here, it actually becomes a lot harder to separate them. My preference is Shimano and the ci4 is a great reel. I havent used a 4000 so i can't state what its like but as yakkindan said, they improve with use, that's for sure. My only concerns with Daiwa are the longevity of them. No sealed bearings is a recipe for disaster. I am a fastidious maintainer of my reels and i still can't get them to run smooth after a solid season. I have a 2500 Stella FA which is at least 8 years old, been through the wars and as smooth as the day i cracked it out of the box. That said, I have a 4 year old Sol and it still runs good, not great but does the job. I do appply oil to the bearings though after EVERY use. |
