Took my Certate in for a service about 3 weeks ago.
Called them up today and it turns out it was done a week ago. But no phonecall. ![]() Didn't think much of it, I was merely expecting just them to re-grease some parts and be smooth and quiet like a certate should be. Anyway, I went to the tackleshop which did the service to pick it up. Initially I was expecting a 'Certate' but at first wind I was to say the least - not impressed. To put it simple, my stradic FI would have been equally as smooth... I would say, it would have a 'dry' feel aswell. I did notice however it wasn't AS noisy as the day I handed it to them - but still not silent like it should be. As I did a more 'finesse' approach I could actually feel the reel meshing when I turned the handle slowly. Not to mention a deep scrape on the side plate. ![]() As I was checking for more marks I decided to have a glimpse at the price for the service. ![]() It turns out that there was an ever so tiny mark on the Pinion gear and had to replace it. Which apparently cost $80 plus the service being $38 itself. This being my first service I was under the impression that if by any reason they had to replace a part of the reel I would be notified. This was not the case.... The guy at the tacklestore said he'll tell the guy which serviced my Certate to look over it with free of charge. I should have my answer by 3 o'clock today. But, judging by the past - I would have to call them. Now as I got home, I'm kind of concerned about what I should expect second time over. Considering, the guy that did the serviced apparently looked over my reel for 2 hours trying to workout what was making the grindy noise and feel... Do you think I would be better of to pay the $118 and send it to Daiwa? Considering the pinion gear have already been replaced. ![]() P.S - I have felt my mates Sol and Certate. So, I know what I should be expecting, even for an average my reel doesn't fit in. Last edited by -Pivot-; 01-03-2011 at 10:18 PM. |

Lesson learnt don't let dodgy backyard reel servicers near any of your reels in particular high end reels that they wouldn't be set up to service with gear jigs etc ![]() Mark |

How old is this certate and has it been used heavily? Whoever did your servicing obviously doesn't know his stuff, or is just trying to rip you off. If they replaced the whole gear set (you can;t replace just the pinion, you must replace everything), they should give you the old parts as proof.

Especially since Daiwa only sell Certate gears as a set (pinion and drive gear together)

tournament reels should ALWAYS go back to daiwa for a service!
Not only can you void your warrenty but whoever services your reels may not have parts available ect. a standard service of a tournament reel without parts included is $99 |

It was both the pinion gear and drive gear.
I just thought a Pinion gear was both parts. It had only been used twice when I bought it and twice by me. - and $99 for a Service.. Geesh! I probably should have done the research before I started... Will Daiwa Contact me if parts needs to be replaced? I was planning to get a new Baitcast outfit this week too...:\ |

Yep definitely better off sending it to Daiwa mate.
The guys in the service department are awesome. They know what they are doing. I have had a few reels serviced through tackle shops in the past and wont be doing that again. Send all my reels straight to daiwa these days! Cheers |

Just called them and told them to send it to Daiwa.
No point paying so much for a Certate that after coming home. Actually feels worst them my Symetre! Hopefully after all this it will come back feeling new... No chance on a refund considering he already put the pinion AND drive gear in the Certate already.. I had doubt when I first handed it in.. |

Feel sorry for your experience, but a bit curious of why u need it being served just after being used for several time? Or the reel already had some problem at the beginning?

When I received it, it felt smooth and the noise was hardly noticable.
Until I took it out on the water, and once it started winding in a lure. It would start to get a slight grind and turn out very noisy. It seems as though, it was good until pressure was put onto it. NOTE: that I was only casting Small Bombers and X Raps at the time. ![]() It was just annoying to fish with, the noise was being a nuisance when fishing a whole day.. Plus the slight grind just got irratating also over time. It was calling for a service. |

I have a sol that is similar (althought not terrribly loud, just enough to get my attention and p*&& me off) and a Abu cardinal as well. Smooth as in the garage, when under pressure there was a grinding noise. Stuffed around for a while with the Cardinal pulled it apart, lubed everything no change. Thought about it and figured it couldn't be in the body so put it in a rod holder wrapped line around the roller to isolate it and pulled it back and forward to spin the roller and I could feel and hear the grind. Once I knew what it was it didn't bother me. Too late now though. You would think a shop would test that first.

It does make sense,.. but the noise is kind of gone since the service. Like I said hopefully Daiwa can fix this situation... Should have asked about the grind earlier... |
