NSW South Coast - Lures

I've been fishing the South Coast (easy to get to from my base in Canberra) and there are no end of lakes, creeks and inlets to throw a lure around. It's beautiful.

Early on when I started breaming with lures I had a lot of success in clearish-green water with the classic squidgey wriggler in blood worm. But as I have begun experimenting with hard-bodies and other colours I have found it much harder to nail down some effective colours and patterns. Part of the problem is that I made the early assumption that all advice is good advice and ran out and bought lures that someone in WA or QLD suggested was good. I should have looked for area specific advice.

If anyone is willing to give me a few tips on this it would be greatly appreciated. Especially now that the water is tea-coloured and murky it has been extra hard.

I find that lures with colours similar to a prawn seem to work well for me. Wether it be on the surface, shallow or deep.

I used the same lures around Merimbula on the South Coast as I do up here in Ballina and caught plenty of fish.

Good Luck

Have a look around your area and do a bit of research, if there are crabs and mussels, then dark greens/browns and blacks (normally lures with a bit of opacity as well). Muddy prawn is another good option with brown and orange.

My go too colour in those waters is a green back. Replicates small tailor which are abundant in those parts. Works a treat on the surface which then drives my decision for sub surface. Favourite HB's are sammy 65 & deep chubby. Hope that helps

Hey mate I find clear salmon head shallow Chubbys work really well but to be honest I really don't think colour plays all that much of a difference it's more so were you cast I think most people just have a favourite colour just due to the fish were on the day they used that colour, I'm jut not a fan of fluro clouts as there isn't much in the river that is fluro

Fave flats colour in clear water? Chubby minnow brown suji
Fave flats colour in murky water? Matt black Camion with red eyes
Fave crank colour in murky water? Chubby Suji, absolute stand out for me.
Fave crank colour in clear water?[/QUOTE] Chubby blue gill

Chubby suji is kinda clear with a bit of yellow and black stripes, it really stands out in murky water. I like Blue gill in clear water, the black stripes against the clearish body seem to do well. Don't forget to swab then with Sfactor as well.

These are just my IMO.

Cheers

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Obviously it's a bit about colour, a bit about technique and a bit about confidence.

In any case I've got a few more ideas to try thanks to your responses.

Mate, I dont fish as far south as you but I mostly start with natural colours, greens, browns and prawn type patterns. Transparent if possible and red eyes if possible. These are where I start and rely on rattles and action to get the interest in murky water rather than bright colours.
