The lever drag feature has been around for a while in japan, but I am not sure if it is really useful here. I can see some situations where it would be handy to have it, but then I can see some situations where it will just simply get in the way. I think it is just Daiwa milking every cent they can out of the Branzino name.

Level brake has been used in ISO fishing (rock fishing) in Japan for a long time (>20 years). You can just use one finger to control releasing line or not, a bit like thumbing your baitcaster. It is useful in rock fishing for bream and blackfish to prevent the fish suddenly going into snag. (Normal drag reel responds too slowly in here, when a fish starts pulling out line from your reel, you cant stop it suddenly. You need to use your other hand to catch the spool).
Then about 10 years ago, Daiwa released the first LBD reel (level brake + drag), in order to target newbie market who are new to using LB reel, and dont know when you should release the level brake while the fish pulling too hard over your line breaking strenght. Now, if you lock the level brake too hard, you still have the drag releasing line for you before the line breaks........While someone thought this was an innovation, the other thought this idea was just crap becos it lost the true meaning of "level break"......whatever.  And about 3 years ago they started to introduce this kind of LB/LBD reel in eging and lure fishing. Cheers.

crazy stuff!
A mate of mine just got back from Japan. He purchased a Shimano surf reel, it has NO drag!!!! Its a big real 2, size 10,000 ish. It also does not hold very much line on it either only about 150m of 20lb braid. I cant remember the model type, but it sure was strange to see such a big reel, with no drag and such little line capacity. I wonder why the hell they would make such a reel. My mate (does not know much about fishing) was shattered when i told him that his new pride and joy was only suitable for flathead

That lever would be useful in some situation but would be more in the way on others. Many a time when im trying to land a trev im holding the spool but with the drag still loose in case it goes for its last little spurt. On my bait caster though thumbing the spool is very much part of fighting the fish for me easy way to apply some breaks.

Somehow I can see the point if you are using that for Seabass around the pylons. Branzino is supposed to be for seabass fishing?
If the fish run away from the structure you let it run and play it outside. If it dives straight into the structure you can stop it, and drag it out. Years ago I used to do a lot of ISO fishing, and that on/off fighting technique surely works.

these reels are impressive, my Japanese friends both use them on the pier, fishing small baits under a float in a trail. They do well on trevally and bream
One of them has the exist anniversary lever model (and uses it!) and it is probably the closest thing to art you can get in fishing...
