grinding luvias
Gday,
I have a diawa luvius 2000 that is about twelve months old and recently i noticed that it wasnt as smooth as some of my other reels so i pulled it appart and cleaned and oiled it up with diawa reel grease and oil but if anything it is now worse. It has been put back together as per the diagram that i am sure of but it still grinds and the handle has a lot of slop in it compared to my 2500 luvius. What do you reckon bearings gone? It fish mainly off kayaks so it has a hard life but can it be saved? |

Yep, check that you have put the tiny metal shims on the correct side of the main gear.

Does the grinding go away when you press the handle in and turn at the same time? Sounds like you've lost a shim or 2. Not sure about the Luvias but the shims arent a listed part on the Sol schematics.

Yeah best thing you can do is send it to Daiwa, may be a while over Xmas though.
Yak reels do inadvertently get a lot of salt spray which does get into them from time to time. Has it ever been for a swim? Shane |

Just curious, how many shims are supposed to be on each side? I also noticed there are some that are gold, some that are silver and stiff, and some that are silver and soft. Also, in what order do they go in? I bought a certate 2000 used, it had all the shims on 1 side, and even after replacing the gears, there is a still a slight grind, and its very stiff to turn the handle. Sorry for the hijack, but it would be great if somebody could help me out.
Cheers, Daiwafreak |

In your case you have too many shims in there, as that's what happens when you do-the reel binds up. Try taking out the thinnest one in there and see what happens, it should do the trick. |

In schematics they're just refered to as "washer". Last edited by Gav; 23-12-2010 at 11:49 PM. |

None of my reels had more than three in them, so it's just a generalisation so don't panic it's all good. As long as they cover the different thicknesses then you'll be able to mix'n'match until it's as good as you can get it.

My Sol had 5 or 6 in it from new. They are all different thicknesses and now I'm waiting for some more to arrive from Daiwa. It really helps if you've got a micrometer and you know how to use it.

I removed 2 of my 5 washers and it is noticeably smoother. The reel had 5 washers with the old set of gears, the new set of gears works well with 3 or 2. Its weird how these little washers can make so much difference to how a reel feels.

They certainly make a big difference...So all it really needed was 3 and there was 5 in there-no wonder it was stiff!.
