Need help on surface luring retrieves...

With the warmer weather approaching, it is quite common to see a lot of surface activity even somewhere as "busy" as the Yarra early in the mornings and just before sun down. I reckon a lot of them would be mullet though there'd be bream amongst them and I got a few towadis, PX45s and a tiemco pencil for that purpose.
Tied one on and realised, I don't really know how to retrieve them apart from the popper type retrieve and I reckon the walk-the-dog style would go real well. How do you do one of them retrieves? Some of the youtube videos I've seen, they look easy but I think it looks easy once you've gotten into the groove of them. Also, most of them are done standing up (on a boat or on the shore) with the rod tip pointing down whereas I'd be doing most of my fishing in a kayak. So how do I go about using the towadis and PX45s?

try small twitches while winding slowly, experiment with it a little bit untill you get a rythem going also dont forget a nice amount of pauses.

yeah. to get a walk the dog action it really is just a series of small twitches with a turn of the reel handle. change the speed of the twitches depending on the lure ur using until you can see it moving side to side in the water.

i hold the rod out to the side, and just twitch it a few inches and wind just enough to give momentum, the zig zag when you have the timing right.

hey mate yes you can walk the dog with the rod tip up but that only works if the lure is a fare distance away and not wrong about the sammy but i think they are too big for bream so try the berkley scumdog its the exact same as the sammy only smaller and its done me a treat with the bream but yer dont forget the pauses should be getting most your bream on the pauses

Walking the dog with the rod tip up isnt that hard, but its mostly about timing the flicks of the rod tip with the wind of the handle. Not sure about how it goes when sitting in a yak though. There was an article in Fishing World Magazine a few months ago about surface luring from a kayak, I cant remember which month it was or what the article was called, all I remember was that it was written by a lady kayak fisho.

hope this helps

I do a fair bit of fishing out of my kayak and its mostly using pencils.Hold the rod at about 45deg and just give it 2 taps toward you.You will see the lure zig zag wait a few secs then do again.Once you get the action then vary your pauses to suit the fish depending on their mood. And hold on sometimes they will want to rip the rod from your hands.Been having the most luck with nw pencils probably because i use them the most. But got some PX55s and they are very nice to.Good luck hope this helps you.

cheers.....Roy

Is there no chance you can stand up in your yak?? I always stand up to fish and after a bit of practice it becomes 2nd nature, I just sit back down to fight an land fish... It would make life alot easier especially when it comes to fishing topwaters

If I could stand up in my yak, that would make peeing a lot easier for me. My yak is the baby of the Hobie range, the Sport, and the only time I ever stood up in it was to retrieve a lure from a tree and even then I had the tree to hold on to. No chance of standing for me. Don't really want to risk tipping it over or falling in. I'm more likely to fall in than tip the thing over I reckon.
