Does anyone use backing before putting on Fireline??

Hey everyone...

Quick question.. Im just about to spool up my new reel with fireline but wanted to know if everyone puts on some backing first (mono) or just straight up spools the lot onto the reel.. its only 125 yards and its less then 1kg dia. equil so it wont even go close to filling the spool...

What do you guys do?

Blake, absolutely go with backing. Just get hold of some cheap thin diamater mono for the job.

Yep, use backing

Because your right it wont fill the spool, and also without backnig unless u use a lil tape it could slip because theres no stretch and friction between the line and the spool

search around the forums, some ppl here have suggesetd ingenious methods of putting the right amount of backing on

Hey guys...

Ive got some 10lb mono would that be to big?? Im putting on 6lb fireline...

Should I go for something smaller then the fireline like 2-4lb mono??

I use 4.5 kg Penn 10X as backing, and I only top shot with fireline.
I roll out about half (62 yds) and topshot it on, that way I get 4 goes out of one spool, half on one reel, half on another, then when it wears turn it around by spooling up another reel, worn end to the backing.

the tackle shop i took my reel to yesterday, they filled up my spool with 6 lb fireline directly with no backing.

Ive got an Avenger 20 Okuma, and he said the fireline is plenty, there is no need for backing.

Is this ok? cause when i look at my spool, its pretty much full.

It isn't for reasons of spool filling that a nylon monofilament backing is recommended. The Fireline won't grip the spool properly (practically zero stretch is the reason I think) and the line load can rotate on the spool, rendering the drag useless.
You should at least use a minimal layer of backing for that reason. This is what I've read and not field tested. I use some backing under my Fireline and have had no problems.

well you definately need some backing as Torvic said there is no stretch and thus the fireline slides on the spool. Personally I run a full spool of 4lb fireline with a bare minimum of 4lb vanish as the backing, that is about 5 metres.

I know you can save money by top shotting but the way I see it you only have to be stripped of line by a bronze whaler, Mulloway, Trevally and it's goodbye to line and terminal tackle once you get to the cheap backing. Fireline lasts longer than mono so you still get good value. I buy the 300 yard spools.

Just my thoughts and this method has saved me a few times.

I too, was choosing some backing and am thinking of using some cheap 6 pound Jarvis Walker as my backing before my fireline.

Chris, you should be fine with the 6lb Ive used up to 12 lb and had no probs as jp said I would avoid top shotting. Also keep your spool nicely topped up to aid in longer casting

i have got an okuma avenger AV 20 reel.

i took my fireline at the tackle shop, they spooled it up.

they didnt use any mono backing, and they just tied a knot onto the spool with fireline and put that tape onto it. ( the tape used to hold the fireline on the spindle)

now ive got plenty of line on my reel, more then enough actually, i am a few metres off now. and ive had no problems

i have also used electical tape for backin its a bit of trial and error with backin,wrap some tape around your spool probaly about ten turns then put your 125 yd of fireline you need the fireline to come just under the lip of your spool about 3mm otherwise the line will peel off on its own and will cause you all sorts of probs if you find you have put too much on or not enough simply put your spare spool on and wind it back on to that add or subtract tape then rewind untill its perfect it pays to get this line fill 100% right as it will help your casting accuracy no end and distance .......................
