give me my blade back

ive lost 5 blades to flathead in the last week, while targetting bream in lake macquarie!

without going to the use of heavy leader or wire, does anyone have an anti flathead retreive or a technique to avoid flathead whilst breaming?

they seem to like the expensive ones best of all.

What size/type of leader are you using
Eg dedicated leader fluoro that is a bit harder than normal fluoro? What strength?

It might just be a case of going to 8 or 10lb hard fluoro leader?

Flatties tire our very easily, maybe try to use that to your advantage I've caught a DohDohDohDohload of flatties here and after bout 15seconds they literally give up.

i had been using 6lb flourocarbon, only because i was targetting bream.went to 10lb and lost another one.

i hook up and just hope the flatty is hooked outside its gob.some of these flatties have been real good fish as well

could free spool them and let them swim around for a while, but no fun in that.

cheers

try using no leader at all. Maybe if you attempt running your braid to the lure might have an effect. If you notice that you stop catching fish all togherther then stick the fluor back on. Might be worth a try, as stoopid as it may seem.

just run a single trebel on the back of your blade...i use 4lb as a rule and dont lose too many to frogs....then again you get those days were there engulfing them and you just got to go softly softly ...

Flattys

Hey,

Plenty of big lure eating Flatties in the Lake, if its not flatties then its big choppers! Can't imagine getting to many bream once you go above 6lb in the Lake. Some days you just lose a lot to Flatties.

The only place worse is the clarence, I lost 6 chubbies once there in a day!

Regards,

i like your way of thinking mr miagi.having the one treble might just be enough to allow the blade to act as a leader protection.

thanks for your thoughts on the subject boys.

just had an idea. if i actually target the flatties, that should be enough to stop them from biting!

cheers

Along with what Spiz has said, you may want to look at some of the stiffer more abraision resistant models of Fluoro. They are less limp so not that good for plastics but woul dbe great with Blades/Vibes. I have been using 7lb Vhard (sunline) and have found it to be excellent even after being wrapped around pylons covered in mussels. It's dearer but saving one VX,ZX,Bevy etc... makes up the difference in cost. At least that's how I've been looking at it.

Best of luck holding onto your gear.

Have you tried using ZX vibes? I've found these to be very good for flatties, because 99% of the ones I've hooked have been on the outside of the mouth.

My non-boater at the Tweed comp borrowed a VX blade and lost it to a flathead.

Next drift of the bank, I landed a flathead that had my blade and an extra blade in its mouth - the one lost only 10 minutes before.

So my advice is to just catch the offending fish and get it back!

Cheers,

SM
