tobyflint,

the idea for surface fishing is to attract attention to the surface and influence a fish to strike. where abouts will you be fishing first of all???
the main place to use a suface lure is just simple flats, these parts of the river are playgrounds for bream, whiting, flathead and you may even come across a queeny
just a simple bloop is enough to grab their attention.
to create this bloop, just hang the rod tip low and flick the rod downwards to pull the lure through the water.
there are other methods such as walking the lure and constant blooping.
you can just experiment with retieves and find what works best for you.
you should also try some other proven surface lures like;
reidys poppers
px45
bubble pop 35/45
baby rover
rack raider strike pro.
anyways, i hope this helps and hopefully you can get into some fish

cheers

Minimal splash of water doesn't mean the breams won't see it. All you need is a small pop/bloop.

Unless you're using a skitterpop, sounds like a jetski passing by

Youtube is your friend. I'm sure there is some footage of brett wilson chasing whiting on poppers in forster somewhere on youtube, failing that, buy the squdgies dvd 6. It has some info on how to use poppers.
Just a pull the rod down in a short jerky motion to make the lure move foward quickly. The cup face will make water shoot out from it and go "bloop". repeat, so on and so forth.
You can also lift the rod up to impart the same action, this is handy if your landbased.
When the water is very still, I like to use small bloops, but when its windy i prefer large bloops, with the reasoning behind this being that when the water is glassy, bream can get spooky and less so when there are ripples on the water.

where abouts are you from? The surface fishing improves in summer and is harder at this time of year if your from the cooler southern states.

Different styles of lure mate. A soft plastic lure with a long riggly tail doesnt have a big impact on the water surface. Where as a popper that is 70mm long and about 9grams moves a load of water and can spook bream. Im not saying it wont work; but it can spook bream.
On the other hand; a windy day with plenty of ripples and waves, a bigger lure can work really well.
But as was said earlier, this guy fishes in a protected area with smooth water. So i dont think a popper would work there very well, especially this big. Perhaps he could try a sammy 65, or a jazz zapper. smaller profile lures will not spook bream as easily.

They'll be fine, just the only berkley poppers I could find on an australian website was the big ones. As previously said...the windier the better for surface fishing usually. A according to that, today would be fantastic, as it is currently blowing a good 30knts. Howling

Altho I have caught fish when its been glassy/raining/little breeze
