What makes blades vibrate?

This is linked to the "making your own blades" thread (sort of), what is it about the blades that makes it vibrate like it does? The shape of the blade? The weight? balance?
I was thinking of buying some blade blanks (geez they are hard to get!!), and crimping some split shot as weights and wondering if that will work.

If you want to find blanks try frogleys offshore. The do-it molds are on their website. Not sure about the split shot idea but at least you could give it a go.

As I understand it, the tow point is located behind the blades centre of gravity. When retrieved, this causes the lure to rock over to one side, then water pressure tries to straighten it. The blade rocks over centre, going the other way, then goes back etc etc..... causing the vibration. You basically design it to be unstable....

If you towed it from the nose, above the heavy weight, it wouldn't vibrate at all.

Cheers,

Pat

Almost right, the operator gets cold and the vibration is transmitted down the line to the blade

Yep, berkley big eyes are great. I can't think of ones that don't work.

As for technique, use it like a softplastics - a short lift, double twitch, triple twitch or lots of small hops.

I just recently scored 13 damiki blades for $5 each

Don't bother buying them, just make them.

The TT ghost blades are based on Paul Kneller of Big River Bait and Tackle "Shake and Bake" ghost blades which are made in a do-it mould. They make them with 1mm thick plastic bodies. I happened to stumble across this, but your regular DVD case (like the one Fishing DVD comes in) is the same stuff.

You can melt the lead off a body you have (or make up your own design), trace it on the plastic with a pin, cut it out roughly with scissors or a knife and then the best way I found was using an orbital tool like a Dremel to grind out the fine shape and then just drill the holes you need. Then add the lead by crimping split shots or sack up and buy a mould.

(and yes, I know Koolabung made an X-ray blade around the same time as Paul but thats another arguement)

the dvd plastic is weak and brittle.....i made some blades from the clear plastic safety lens that i use in my cheap boc welding helmet....it truly is indestructable and i have yet to have a splitring ripped out of a hole on moderate sized bream....i added a split shot then used devcon two pack glue to hold it on....it was a bit of work and i just buy blades now as im way too lazy....
