Bearing Buddy problems

I have a quintrex 420 discovery trophy purchased together with a quintrex trailer.
The trailer is fitted with bearing buddys.Seeing as I have been in the salt water on roughly 8 times I pumped some marine grease into the bearing buddys.
To my horror I could not remove the grease gun from the nipple and after panicking for 15 minutes or so I used a large screw driver to pry the grease gun free.
On talking to the Dealer he tells me its not an unusual occurence and I could not do any damage using the screw diver to pry the gun free.
I did not like the way the springs seem to come out a distance within the buddy..
Does anybody out there have the same problem and is there any cure.

YOu're gonna have problems getting answers when you post in the wrong section!!!

It is a common problem. It is because of the pressure build up of the gun. I don't recall the solution but i'm pretty sure it has been discussed on here if you search for it. If there is someway for you to relieve the pressure in the gun that should do the trick.

on some grease guns you are able to turn the sleeve that is located where the grease comes out, this will cause the bit that locates over the nipple to decrease or increase in size. next time try turning the sleeve in a clockwise direction and it should come away from the nipple easy.

Marine Grease??

Don't use marine grease in the wheel bearings. Use wheel bearing grease, marine grease will not stand up to the heat created in bearings and they will seize.

the disc the nipple is attached to is meant to move when you pump grease in....sounds like you pumped too much in if the nipple got stuck...you only need to pump enough grease till the disc reaches its extremities....not till it comes out around the seal....

too much grease and you will blow the bearing buddies off the hubs!!!

on grease....there is many different types of "marine" grease....some ok for wheel bearing ....some not....industral marine grease like what is used on driilling equipment etc normally is designed to biodegrade....its made with non-petroleum materials...no good

Check the label for suitability for wheel bearings... I use high quality lithium soap based NLGI 2....normally it has LXMO on the label ....often automotive water resistant grease is fine...

In Australia there is only a couple of grease packers (no grease made here anymore) who pack for all the different brand names...

or go a more expensive imported product like Fuchs Lubritech, Lubrimatic, Lubriplate, Microlin....

should pull you bearings off and clean and repack every 6 months if you boat gets well used....otherwise once a year.....

Hi John,

Another gret grease you can use is inox grease. It is a MX 8 grease, high temp, salt resistance and a great overall grease. It's not cheap it's roughly sells for around $20 or there abouts per 450gr cartridge.
