My Yak in breamin mode
Hi All ,
Heres a few pics of my Hobie Quest ready for some upcoming Yak bream comps. The live well holds 25 or 35l depending on where I put the outlet fittings and is powered by a Rule380 bilge pump . All electrics wired to switches on the center consol and powered off a 12V battery in waterproof container under the seat. The Cuda 300 fish finder has a thru- hull transducer set up using dielectric grease and previously water . The anchorlight/flagpole uses a marine 12 globe LED mast light from Whitworths mounted in a modified/extended plug in anchor light pole. Very bright and very low power usage. There are two Ram mount balls mounted on a aluminium doubler on the consol which take a pair of 2008 series RAM tube rod holders although I only normally run one. Hobie anchor trolley fitted LHS and a "yakyaker "stlye pvc tube landing net holder on the bow. I have also made a stake out pole which attaches to the anchor trolley which is damn handy on the flats. Nice Yak mate!
They are pretty heavy looking rods for breaming ![]() Have you considered installing a rudder on it? I'm not sure about Hobies but i could not live without mine on my X-factor! |

Thats my snapper rods . I am currently using a Berkley Dropshot 7ft 4 kG rod with a Daiwa Revros in a 2000 size. Re the rudder it will definately be the next purchase for the Quest. |

I thought that might be the case. There is a snapper mission planned for tomorrow morning. I'll be launching at woodies around 6:30am and heading out from there. A few yak fishers are going along I believe. Perfect winds for it (virtually none).
You wont look back once you have a rudder. They are great for long trips to keep you on track (eg 5k's offshore) as well as tight quarters stuff. |

Hi Hazel ,
I am watching the trip section on YFW and may head down to Penguin Island but wont be heading out wide as I dont have EPIRB or flares hence need to stay within 400m from shore.. Fisheries/Water Police were in evidence on Friday down that way as you would expect. Must pick up a release weight as well. Cheers Brendon Last edited by brendon; 03-04-2010 at 08:55 PM. |

Nice setup! Given you're paddling not pedalling, not sure the rudder will be absolutely necessary and if you get one, you'll need a foot controlled one as your hands will be on the paddles.

No worries mate. EPIRB is not required in the metro exemption area which includes the sound out to Rotto. Flares... good point, I need some too.
And that is some very green lawn!!! |

http://www.austinkayak.com/products/...udder-Kit.html There is a cheaper version but one of the local guys has it and not all that happy with it. The rudder will sure make life easier in strong cross winds .Also allows you to adjust attitude whilst drift or at anchor to a degree. cheers Brendon

Get yourself an old table tennis bat / ping pong paddle to help adjust drifts and position your yak whist still fishing. This means that you don't have to put down your rod and use your big paddle with two hands to make these adjustments. Very handy if you have a fish on and need to change position slightly to continue fighting the fish.
