Well done to all that got fish today, our team got one undersize bream all day a very hard day on a very low tide made it hard going, so to all that checked in a bag WELL DONE! and thanks to the organizers and sponsors for the prizes, keep up the good work!

A topic for discussion - Im just wondering why do we have to run these comps from 7am - 2pm? cant we stagger the times to coincide with some high water. I realize the tides this time of year are usually late arvo so it may not be achievable unless we have late arvo comp. But maybe we can change months and times to get some good tides. For example high tide today is 6.15pm (Barrack St), so why couldnt the comp start at say 12pm to 7pm then we can fish further into the rising tide and maybe get better fishing. I have always found fishing at low tides in the Swan very hard, but thats just me, maybe i just need more practice and maybe thats the whole point of the comp to make it harder, anyway whats your thoughts guys?

Squidgee man I agree with you whole heartedly about the hard fishing (unfortunatelyI couldn't enter because of my boat insurance stuff up), but I was at the weigh in and heard the stories from fellow MBA members. And yes everything from my GPS "hunting/fishing" and the various other things like moon phase etc etc said that the best times were outside the comp timings. But as Graig has said before on this forum, there is a lot of things that make up the events, and you can't forsee the unforeseen. Apart from everything else to have a 1900hrs finish time would disadvantage the out of towners (Mandurah etc) and at the end of the daythere was a winner. Maybe it would be a bit tedious to have everyonehave a full bag of horses, (not to mention a 5 hour weigh in. So enjoy the comp even so the fish are a bit dissapointing, if I sound derogatory inany way, it is not intended, cheers.

No mate its cool I fully understand it would be hard on the outatowners. I know there is a lot of planning that goes into a comp. I just thought maybe the months could be changed so that we get some good tides duringthe 7am - 2pm timeframe. I was just after some opinions on what people thought. Your points are valid

was a defiantly hard to say the least but beats work

yeh it was hard and the tides didnt play favour for many but that happens from time to time. some comps can be really unpredictable and today was somewhat harder than usual. i thought there was a reasonable amount of tidal movement, enough to get the fish moving but for the big shutdown id put it down to the recent falling barometer and the lead up to the upcoming neap tides. not the best combination for fishing.

with having a 12pm - 7pm session it would really only be possible in summer due to the light issue. a time frame like that in winter and youd face the issue of extra equipment for lighting at the weigh in or change weigh in venues that has inbuilt lighting facilites. correct me if im wrong but i think summer is generally known for its low tides in the morn anyway where as winter has descent tide levels but cold water haha

The whole day was difficult. I put in about 2pm. Saw a lot of the people pulling their boats out of the water a short while later. We caught zip all day. Not even so much as a bite for most of it. Fish started coming on the bite about 6:30. It's hard to know when the tournaments should be on. Sunday arvos on the swan the water is messed up from all the traffic. That would have to put pressure on the fishing too. All of us have pulled plenty of fish on a low tide before it's just that today the fish just weren't biting.

Guys

I am happy to hear suggestions about improving the comps and where possible giving the anglers what they want.

To give you some idea of the planning and work that goes into the setting of the dates etc the following occurs and this is not the full list:

Sponsorship proposals drafted;
Potential sponsors contacted;
Calendar worked through - school holidays, fathers day, mothers day, Xmas, Easter etc. plotted.
Draft dates entered.
Draft calendar submitted to ABT to avoid clashes;
Draft calendar submitted to Govt authorities for approval;
Meet major sponsors and work through calendar etc;
Risk Management plan drafted and submitted to relevant authorities;
Provisional booking of Matilda Bay site (if available);
Provisional booking of Mandurah Offshore Fishing Club (if available);
Follow up potential sponsors;
and on and on.

While I take the point about the tides trying to factor them into the equation restricts potential dates even more and good tides do not necessarily mean more or bigger fish and it is still the same for everyone.

Shifting the time may sound good with hindsight but don't forget factors such as weather and sea breezes that often howl in later in the day which leads to a higher level of risk.

And from a selfish point of view - my day doesn't end when the comp finishes (at 2.00pm for instance) or when the presentations are over - i then pack up, go home and unpack the trailer, return the trailer to Leon, go home, get out the computer, send the results to ABT, complete other paperwork and think about the article I have to write for WAFM etc - last Sunday I finished around 7.00pm (and still have to write that article). So a later finish is not too attractive for me.

Hope the above gives you some background about what goes into running the Classics and you may now understand why it is not necessarily easy to make changes.

Also, I like many of you have to balance family life, work and leisure activities - you may find that later start times don't suit many of us??

by the sounds of things looks like melbs get there neap tides a week earlier than us

We pre fished the past 2 week ends very sucessfully on the same tides. Then come comp day nothing. I think it was more to do with the sudden change in weather on Saturday that turned the fish off. Just my thoughts. Some of the more experienced anglers would probably know a bit more about pressure systems etc. I think from memory the water temp changed quite a bit too over the course of a couple of days.

Makes our donut a little more bearable when you see the majority of the field struggled too.
