Justify prices??

G'day,

Can anybody justify why certain hard bodied lures are so exspensive? I looked at my local tackle shop today and checked out some lures, and camions were $25, chubbies $23 ect, some other small bream hard bodies, were over $30!
I realise that blades are a bit cheaper, due to the simpler design of the lures, but how come hardz and stiffy lures are made cheaper than other lures of the same design?

Im sure, as like most things in life you get what you pay for, but untill money grows tree, i really cant justify spending $30 on a lure to lose in one cast.

Regards,
FF

Yep the prices are getting out of control, In 2007 i could buy sx 40 for about 16 bucks and they were at the higher end of the price scale. Now their mid 20s or close to.
The aussie dollar is strong too these days?
I recall a few lure importers and tackle shop owners telling us how difficult times were when the dollar dropped 12 months ago....

All I can say is times must be pretty sweet now.

we pay for a few things when purchasing high end lures. these companies sink alot of money into research and development of their product aswell as advertising and the people they sponsor to promote the product. when you buy these lures you can be assured they are well proven.
in saying that there are plenty of cheap lures on the market that don't have all the professional backing that will catch fish.

I try to always shop local and support Aust shops but I have found many jap shops on the net that have bream lures and squid jigs .............less than 1/2 price!!!
eg megabass squid jigs here $40 AUD, from Japan $16AUD
5 jigs $200 v $100 with shipping
I'm a battler, so next time when I need some lures I might buy (not all) from o/s

Japanese technology, they are pretty much the best lures so they charge quiet a bit then tackle shops add on more. Much better to buy online, i refuse to pay more than 20 bucks for an SX40 when i can save 5 bucks online and have a greater range of colours, sizes and shapes

Mate and no one will blame you for it. just look at a recent lure price rise.
early 2009 when they were first released atomic hardz were only around $15 now there near 20 each and same goes for most lures.
I went into MO tackle the other day and they want over $14 for a pygmy and over $15 for a R2S chubby.
It's just getting way to dear.
Little tip always go through stock in a small tackle store most don't rotate their stock so there can sometimes be the same lure at the back of the rack for the original price
Works for me...

Hey guys,

I pretty much agree with everyone on this matter. But i would like to say I don't think it is the tackle stores adding a big mark up I think it is more the importer of the product that asks a high price. I also see this happening with reels and rods too. Look at the price of a twin power now. Remember that the tackle stores a trying to make a living and they are getting killed buy the chain stores. I don't work at a tackle store by the way I do work in a retail sector though and not all retail business have a huge mark up on there products. To give you a idea if I sold a $6000 item I would be lucky to crack a $500 profit. In my game this is a commonn problem, everyone wants a better price but you have little to play with already. It most cases it all comes done to quantity sold and how quickly you can move stock.

Cheers
Tim

A bit like smokes realy, they keep putting the price up but people just keep buying them and those things will kill you. I will get what I can from os stores I know it's a shame but when your on a budget and have very little cash it's the way to go. Big fan of some of the megabass gear and with the way the dollar is you can buy them half price or less. Guess we will have to boycott ha ha never happen this sport is huge and getting bigger and they know we will pay simple as that. Probably be up there with gardening as one of the no 1 hobbies, surely just about everyone wets a line.

More and more people are waking up to the fact that you can get some very good prices from buying overseas and it is a shame that we have to do it at times.
The thing is that we are saving quite a bit of money at times. Almost 50%on lures
So who is screwing who on prices locally ??
Importers are saying things are tough, tackle shops say they are just trying to make a living.

If we can buy gear from a shop overseas (USA)that also has to make a profit and that also imports gear to sell and then sends it to OZ.
I'm sure they make a profit on the gear they sell us.

So what is the answer ?

I still buy most of my gear locally, having said that I bought 5 Rapala lures from the US last week, total cost including freight was $35 Aus. and got them 4 days later...

If I bought them from a large well known online tackle store based in QLD who are well regarded for their competitive prices I would have paid $104 . (I placed an order with this same Qld store on Monday and have yet to receive anything so the service from the US was actually faster.

Food for thought.

Unfortunatly its a vicious circle the more we go offshore to purchase lures the pricier they will get here, and more than likely, the less choice we will have. I think if the retailers bite the bullet and lower prices they will be able to break the cycle and get more people buying locally which in turn will create more turnover for thier stock and more profits. Its harder to make money with low turnover and high markup, much better for everyone to have a higher turnover and lower markups. Keeps people coming back.

It is the popularity of the ABTs that's helping this, more people want the latest and greatest so importers put up there prices. also bigger chain stores like DohDohDoh (we should boycott them) pressure importers to give them a better price so they can make more profit, which means importers need to up the price on the smaller shops!!!

I'll always try and help my local shops with larger purchase, because if we don't online will be the only place to buy.......... or bigw

DohDohDohDohDohDohDohDoh have recently dropped their prices recently on reels i noticed. Theu were selling a steez spin reel for 899 now they are 675.
they did have exist for 1049 they are now 930, but other stuff still has not dropped, and the exist were 899 before the GFC.

I agree with most that we should try to support local as most times these are the people we visit to touch and feel the product before we buy overseas, but sometimes the difference is too great to say no, all of us are on a budget. So it is hard not to purchase online.

I will still buy from both, but most will be from OS.
