Hi Rod
The sacrificial anode is made of something more easily oxidized than the metal to be protected. The electrons from the oxidation of the sacrificial anode are at a higher potential than the electrons coming from the oxidation of the metal being protected.
there is a stack of educational type stuff on the internet about it such as :
http://www.corrosion-doctors.org/CP/Sacrificial.htm or
http://www.minnkotamotors.com/_swf/index.asp
choose the riptide link under products and then features, they do a pretty good job of explaining why the riptide motor is protected against corrosion.
