Oily Exhaust
G'day,
Whilst flushing my 15hp Mariner 2-stroke today it had quite a bit of brown oil running down the leg. Is this normal for a 2-stroke seens it hasnt been run for 5 months? The left over fuel that was still in the carby was also quite old, would this effect it? After being flushed for a while the amount of oil coming out reduced. The oil coming from the exhaust was a coffee colour looking brown. Could it a be a head gasket? Nick |

I would say it was just a bit of build up and also the old fuel being flushed out. What is it like now? You may have also had a oiler mixture previously. Good old two strokes gotta lov em. I have a 30hp 2 Stroke Yammie
Cheers Tim

Thanks for that Timmah. After letting it idle for a while the smoke dissapeared and the ammount of oil discharge decreased alot. It pumped plenty of water like normal. I have also change oils would this have had anything to do with it?

hey mate,
I'm not a expert but i have been working in the outdoor power equipment busines for 5 years and yes it could also have something to do with your oil. There are obviously many brands and qualitys of oil out there. Most of the time it is usually the amount of oil you mix in the fuel. A bit more oil never hurts. Aslong as you can open it up every know and then you will should get rid of any build up of oil. Cheers Tim

I find it is usally when the oil to fuel ratio has more oil and if the outboard is ilde it seems to come out. It could be the brand of oil aswell but to answer whether or not its normal i say its okay and don't worry to much about it

Cheers. What do you think of Castrol Super Outboard Oil?
Is it a very common problem with 2 strokes and blowing head gaskets? Nick |

I'm sure it would be fine mate. Castrol make the oil for Stihl Australia(chainsaw/outdoor power equipment manufacturer) and they wouldn't use a product that wasn't first class. You will fined most companies will have either Fuchs, castrol or BP mix there oils anyway. I use Yamaha oil but couldn't tell you who makes that.
Cheers Tim

No worries at all, I thought Castrol would of been pretty good quality. I have started using that instread of some cheap oil we picked up when buying the boat. Didnt have much knowledge back then. Would a Petrol Injector/Carby cleaner be something worth while to run through it?

Not sure on that one dude. Someone else may need to answer that. My outboard has a fuel filter bowl in the fuel line, you could always drain that if you have one. Otherwise just run some fresh fuel through it for a while and open it up.
Cheers Tim

hey i have a 25hp tohatsu, and if i have been running the motor for a long period at idle or at very slow speeds, i do get some oil seeping out. I spoke to my mechanic and he said its nothing to be too worried about.
Only problem is when the oil is milky coloured.
