Lures with barbless singles as standard?

G'day all,

Been cruisin the site for ages now, soaking up all the wonderful knowledge you guy are willing to share,

Now my question...

I received a few Megabass Live-X smolts this morning that I purchased on ebay (colours that are not imported only) and I had noticed in the listing pictures that they had singles on them, but I didn't realise that they were barbless, so... What do people think of barbless singles, and would you change them to trebles or barbed singles etc?

I don't know if they are factory tuned to suspend with the lower hook weight the singles provide.

Thanks in advance for your help,

I use them one some lures and situations
the problem can be hooking the fish if they arent in an overly agressive mood
but the major plus is your very unlikely to drop a hooked fish on singles
also i find in really clear water and the fish are really timid that lures with singles get more hits
as it looks more natural without a whole bunch of metal swinging off it

just my 2 cents

Thanks Ben,

Would you leave the front treble point forward or point backward? Seems like it's be less likely to snag point backward, is there a downside to changing it?

when i use them i have them set up like the ones in your pic
i usually add a bit of sticky weight though, so the lure still suspends

Yeah I thought about that, but it came stock with them as a suspender so I don't know if it'll make it sink, that and I'm an hour and a half from salty water to do a swim test

Thanks again.

a smolt with trebles suspends
so unless its got some extra weight inside already it will float
which off the top of my head there isnt a model like that
but im not totally familiar with the megabass range
just try them out and see how the go, in general i prefer lures that suspend

Yeah fully agree with that, like I said I don't know if they got some extra weight added, they're from an "area trout limited" range and the packaging clearly states that it is a suspender, was just wondering if anyone else has had a play with them cos I don't want to loose fishing time fiddling with them when I finally get back down to bream country

hehe welcome to the smolty darkside my friend ! lol

you got 3 great coloursm top is good, bottom is a cracker !

your right the singles come on the 'area trout limited ' models..
i swaped most of mine over to ST36 owners.
there is no diference in the tuning in the factory. the singles will help the lure suspend to float quicker, where the standard factotry trebles and altered ST36's will suspend to very slow float.
ive left a few with the singles for snaggy areas where you may want a lure to float out of nasty spots top prevent the unthinkable !
ive nailed a few bream on the singles and havent bent any BUT i can say the hookup rate s a lot lower than with trebles when they are shy. if they nail the lure then no problems...

Thanks Perrie,

What size ST36's would you recommend?
Yeah I got a few other colours as well but they are my faves from this batch

dont see why the large eye Gamakatsu singles wouldnt work. they are a pretty good guage. all depends on what line class your running as to weather you will bend them.

^ I'll second that....NZ is single hook only, which is good and bad.
