Why wont they bight

The last couple of nights I havent had a single hook up.
(6pm to 8pm, low tide at docklands, drifting unwaited baits near the pylons).

Over the last month and a bit, I've been having some tin-arsed luck on the bream so I havent been paying all that much attention to the conditions. A couple of dud trips later, and I'm looking for excuses.

What are some of the things that turn bream off and then back on again?

Dont worry about being too obvious - Its the only way I'll learn.

G'day Yellow Door,

It seems from your previous posts that you have been fishing the area right behind the stadium around central pier and the like.

I have fished this specific area at least twice a week for the past 12 months with both soft plastics, hard bodies and at times bait and have fished for bream generally for the past 20 odd years.

I have found that this area is quiet around dead low tide. Other parts of the Yarra system are different though and fish well no matter what the tide.

Obviously the best indicator as to whether they are around or not is to be able to see them. Fishing at night would make this impossible though.

There are heaps of other theories relating to water clarity, salinity, water temp etc etc... that attempt to place constraints upon when they may bite or not. I have yet to find a particular trend as far as any of these things are concerned. I wish I could as it would mean I would never go fishless.

For me it is simply a matter of trial and error and consistenly moving around and trying new things until something works, its half the fun and part of the challenge.

Cheers,

George

You have to move around and keep trying different things. Change lures, colors, types, retrievals etc
All part of the fun

Spot on George. I've started branching out recently but its always my starting point.

I always take a torch with me so I can check the stretch after I've fished it with out a hit. On most occasions there's been nothing there. When the water is clear I can see a couple of metres down but I'm on the hunt for a rechargable spot-light to see if they are hiding a bit deeper.

Its encouraging to hear there are areas that work on all tides and I'm really enjoying the search for Hotspots. Its cool how your perception of structures changes as you think of them from a fishes point of view. I never got excited by rotting wood before but now I cant get enough of it!

Thanks for your reply

In the back of my mind I knew I should be trying somewhere else but I've been so spoilt in this area recently that I thought i should just stick it out and something would happen. It wasnt all bad as I did find some interesting Stuctures that might need a bit more water over them before they produce.

The search continues.... Thanks Beefaman

G'day Dave,
When I started I was using 1kg but i couldnt deal with the heart ache. I havent caught enough bream to be able to deal with the bust ups in a mature, adult manner. How many bream do you have to catch before you can be philisophical about getting wrapped around the pylons.

I currently fish 4kg straight to the hook and there have been times where I wish I'd had something heavier.

I had the light leader theory proved to me the other day by a mate fishing next to me with 2kg. We were literally fishing side by side for fish we could see, trying to get double hook ups but they would always hit his first and we never did get that double hook up. His conversion rate at the end of the day was running at 1 fish caught for every 10 hookups. I still dropped my share on the 4kg but until i complete a self help course on dealing with dissappointment, I cant bring myself to put the cotton on the pylon. I know it works but there must be another way.

Ah bugger it - I'll pack some light stuff for when things get tough - When your right your right. Not getting a touch is much worse than short lived white knuckle action.
