Stella 1000FB locked up

Bought a 2nd hand Stella 1000FB recently and took it for a test run. Was working fine for an hour, very smooth, when the reel suddenly locked up during a cast.

Started with noise from the reel during winding which sounded like it was coming from the bearings, couple of cranks later, the gearing locked up and there was very strong resistance when you wind the handle. I tried turning the reel itself manually and it was also very difficult.

I suspect it's problems with the bearings or gears. Really disappointing considering that this is a top-of-the-range Shimano reel as well as my first Shimano.

Anyone else had this issue or can provide any tips?

My suggestion would be send it to Shimano and let them fix it.Try not to pull it apart and fix it yourself it may turn into a disaster and void warranty.

Cheers FW

I was tempted to open it up but thought otherwise...

If I were to go to a tackleshop and ask them to help me send it to Shimano for repair, would they charge me anything extra or just whatever's the bill from Shimano?

Any recommendation on which tackleshop I should bring it to in Melb? Preferably near the Metro.

Hope the repair bill doesn't cost an arm and leg.

Maybe try Compleat Angler in Melbourne Flinders lane
Also know of a guru known as "the reel doctor" i will try find his number for you.I highly recomend him as he services my game reels (Penn International's) every year and always come back smoother than they did before they get serviced. His prices are very good too.

Cheers FW

Send the reel off to a Shimano agent and have them give you a quote as to how much your up for and if it looks to be too much you may just have to cut your losses.
As to the reliability of Shimano reels they hold there own...l still use and run a 1000 stradic FH with no complaints.Hard to know a reel's history second hand but would seem as though it may have not been well looked after.Regular simple do it yourself servicing is a must to maintain your reels in good working order.

Cheers Steve.

Also having trouble with my Stella getting very stiff. thought it was the rod with stuff on the line getting fouled. But have found that when the bail arm is returned after casting something its very hard to turn, after returning the bail arm manually several times it clears (obviously doesn't help when casting to snags etc etc). went on the Shimano web site for warranty and the first thing they want is a credit card number. Pretty disappointed (my stradic however is faultless??).

John & Shayne sounds like you might have a problem with the rotor brake (if the stella has one). I've got a spheros which had a similar problem and it turned out to be the friction ring underneath the rotor which was a bit chopped up.

What does shimano's 10 year warranty cover? When ever you go to buy a reel someone always says something about the warranty being so good. The problem is I always here stories of people paying for reels to be serviced often including replacing parts like gears and bearings.

yeah - i have often questioned that myself! sounds like a car's warranty.

my gf purchased a new toyota and last week there was a fluttering noise coming from the aircond...car was a few months old..took it back, cost us 70 bucks to remove a leaf from the motor...thanks for nothing really!!

im not a professional but i very much doubt that a ARb would self destruct? had so many reels that have continued to work and its never a bearing?

it could be the Anti reverse clutch thats located under the rotor or possibly the fluidrive system's kicked the bucket?

i can reccomend an ex diesel engineer thats an authorised shimano service here on thegold coast but its a hell'ova postage stamps trip....

This is a worksmanship 'guarantee' rather than a 'warantee', there guaranteed to be defect free rather than waranted to last 10 years of use, thats the big difference in the trade. and then we all get messed up with what the Japanese are trying to imply in there written statements as the language is not fully compatible with english??

in total were all doomed....

When my 12 months goes by I’ll send my van staal reel in for it’s regular service if it needs it as I don’t intend using it under water at this stage.
There warranty is a genuine life time.

Van Staal Reels = Terminator + HR Giger (aliens) + Animatrix + a hint of Shimano 100 years in the future = Van Stall Reels....

Slightly over engineered but well worth it if you like biomechanism artwork....

Stick with Daiwa, I have spoken to many reel repairers and all I have spoken to concur That daiwa's are generally more robust. Except for the roller bearing which tends to make some noise but easily replaced.
