I Hurt My Baby
Was fishing with last night with BreamFlu, Ando and Longreach, and wasnt paying attention to a concrete structure next to me and dangerously close to my reel. The inevetible occured and the spool lip is very slightly scratched thankfully on the outside which should not affect performance but is there a way to polish this out. The spool is an 2506 RCS spool tuned by IZE not sure what kind of metal the lip is but its gold.

If it's the Air spool the spool itself is an engineering resin plastic, and the lip is a press fitted metal ring. The gold finish is actually titanium nitride, and while it's really hard stuff, on a soft substrate the deposition can be nicked and scratched.
You could carefully smooth out the ragged bit with some very fine grit paper, and then try to polish it out with a Dremel tool and polishing bit (the ones that look like cotton wheels). Some of the red polishing compound is what I reckon you could try with. Use the smallest bit, and quite high speed. |

I have a high speed dremel (die grinder) with those cloth disks/cutting compound shorlite has mentioned if you want i can bring it down nextime if you want to borrow it. I am just worried that the metal under the gold coating(titanium as SL mentioned) will be prone to corrosion.
Maybe try to hand polish first then use the die grinders polish wheel if needed. let me know and i will bring it, along with a fine selection of cut lunches? ![]() soggy chips? your using the wrong ones, you need to use the ones with the really 'crisp' action, lol |

David, I agree with taking a power tool to something that feels soo fragile. Does daiwa repairs include polishing out scratches? Dont think I risk doing it myself. Thanks for your offer though. Thanks for the info shortlite, will the grit paper take away too much of the protective coating? |

Piscateur - I took a small nick out of the spool lip on one of my Sol spools ages ago. I just did what shortlight suggested with the finest wet'n'dry I could find. It came up great and I dint go through the gold titanium coating.
All I was really worried about was smoothing it out so the line wouldn't hang up on it or get cut by it. |

I dropped my good reel on the footpath and damaged the spool too. I think youll find yours is just plastic. I fixed mine with a file and a cigarette lighter.
Give that a try because its not too much mucking around. |

The deposition coating is a good thickness. By fine grit I mean like 800 grit or higher. You won't go through the TiN (gold) unless you aggressively cut it with say a file or very rough grit. The idea is just to smooth off the roughness. The cloth discs of the dremel and the polishing compound (which is really just a very fine abrasive, like slightly grainy toothpaste) will do the rest. Fats212 is right on the money.
It's big dings in the spool lips that are problematic with opening out the underlying surface. Actually those big dings will show you how thick the coating actually is. You should be fine if it's only lightly scratched. |

You dont need to worry about all that stuff. A file and the lighter worked a treat on my Ryobi, and its a good quality reel. A mate cut his spool with a knife by accident and fixed it with araldite then smoothed it with his girlfriends nail file. After all its only a fishing reel. If your still worried about line catching on it, go to Big W and get another one.
I hope this helps. |

OK gonna give it a go just some more questions. they are very minor scratches almost not visible but I can feel it very slightly with my fingernail.
Which one is less abrasive dremel tool with compound ie will this suffice? or do I still need to sand it down and where do I find 1000 grit paper, bunnings? Thanks for the replys thus far guy great help. Fats whern you mention Wet & dry is the the sand paper or is it something else I should look for. Will call you dave to see if I can borrow the dremel. If you are in the Yarra Mon 15th dec ie tomorrow I will be there after work fishing in the latte prepared by the barista in the sky. |
