Hornet 435 - engine size
Hi all - currently weighing up the engine options on a 435 Hornet Trophy.
I dont have much of clue other than the general differences between 2 & 4 strokes and would really appreciate any guidance from you guys in terms of engine size as to work works best for them and why. At the moment the choice seems to be between the 30 and 40 (2 or 4 stroke) Cheers |

40 honda 4stroke would go nicely, however they are expensive to maintain compared to a 2stroke, they are quieter and smoother but you will pay for it in the long run...

Why would you under power it?
50hp all the way! If you don't you will regrete it..... I had a 435 trophy tiller with a 50 yammie 4 stroke. Excellent boat, will be at the top of my bream boat list soon if I don't go back to a glass one..... ![]() Greg

well if you can put a 50 on it then do it, other wise youll regret it!
(when you said 30 or 40 i thought 40 was what is was rated to)

Thanks guys - yes its rated to a 50 max apparently but thats sort of out of my price range at the moment. I suppose my main question is would a 30hp be generally underpowered and should i stretch for a 40hp?
cheers |

Get as big as you can afford otherwise in a year or so, you will want to upgrade and it will be more expensive than just doin it in the first place, i would definantly say the bigger the better, it will help plane easier especially with a full live well two blokes all your gear, electrics batteries ect ect, and just be a lot more enjoyable, youll probably find yourself taking it out for a squirt without a rod in sight...
i have a 385 and its rated to 25hp and thats what i have on it and i still want somethign bigger, its not slow but it would be heaps of fun with a bigger motor!!!

30hp would be way underpowered IMO, go the 40hp if the budget can't stretch to the 50hp

I have a Yamaha 40 4 stroke on my 435 Hornet. Goes very well and is super quiet, so if you can't get the 50 (would absolutely fly with this) then go with a 40 4 stroke. Probably wouldn't go the 30hp. Cheers Shaun |

I have an 4.27m 60's style aluminium hull with a 30hp on it, I can do 25 knots which is 46 km/h. I would like more speed, but it does the job.
If it is a flatter bottomed boat than mine it will get on the plane very easily and certainly wouldn't be "under-powered". The boat would perform adequately. Depends on how fast you want to go, how many people your going to have on there, etc. For me 2-3 people on the boat and a bit of gear the old girl goes alright for me. Hope that helps. Cheers Benno

Personally it would be an E-Tec 50hp for me all the way. (yes I have a E-Tec 60hp on my mako) I would rather wait to you could save the extra bit of money to be able to buy the best motor you could, and the biggest. Everyone else is right - you would definetly regret under powering it to save a couple of grand. I like the E-Tec because it saves me on running costs - I take my motor in for its first service when a Yammy 4 Banger is going in for its seventh, that was a big selling point for me, but everyone is different.

Mate I have a quintrx 475 bowrider with a 50 yamaha 4 stroke, best motor I have ever owned (and I have had a few) quiet and smooth, and don't believe the ecotech advert about down time for servicing, it doesn't happen.

I have a Honda 50hp on the back of my 445 Hornet and it goes well and gets up to 27kts with 2up and gear.
If you can hold out to afford a 50hp it will be worth it IMO. At the very least go the 40hp if you must, but think long term if you are looking to hold onto the boat a while and also think of resale when that time comes around. 40Hp you will probably get about 23-25kts with standard prop 50Hp I think you would get about 27-29kts with standard prop simmsy.. |

Have a look at Tohatsu HPI motors. They are generally a bit cheaper than the big names but well and truly match them for quality.

Recently sold my 435 HT with a 40 yammy 4 banga on the back. The 40 runs ok but I guarantee that down the track you'll say to yourself 'WHAT IF' i had gone with the 50 (I certainly did). you'll be happy with the 40 but the 50 will be much more fun.

I have been in GregL's old 435 hornet trophy after he sold it, and totally agree that you wouldn't go any smaller than a 50hp which is the max. I have a 400 hornet trophy with Yammy 40 4 stroke tiller and would never go any smaller than max hp on these boats, they are heavy once you put electric, batteries and a live well (optional). I have always been told to buy what you want the first time as it costs alot more to change things later on even if it means you need to wait a little longer to save the extra $$
