Lighting for dinghy

Hey guys,

What lights are needed for me to take my 4m bream boat out on the river at night here in perth. What are peoples idea's for lighting the interior of my boat.

haha pimp my bream boat

mate you will need left and right nav lights (red and green) and an aft light at the stern. Not sure how high etc they need to sit but obvioulsy they need to be visible. Apart from that you only need a torch (I use a rechargeable spotlight) and a head lamp like a petzl one is handy too.

Make sure you follow the 10 knot limit too

From memory the aft/anchor light needs to be at least 1m above the boat and the nav lights can be together as one unit on the bow or seperate on either side of the boat

For interior lighting I use a rechargeable led wand type light that can be used as a torch or for lighting a larger area. Being LED it lasts for an age on one charge and they are pretty cheap to buy, durable and it floats

Our boat uses LED lighting to light the deck.

They have been flush mounted into a couple of panels we've made. One lights the front casting deck and the second the mid deck area. Plenty of light for an extremely low power consumption.

There are heaps of other lighting options on the BLA site though.

I used led clearance lamps. Theyre not bright but light up enough to see. I also carry a lightforce handheld to spot up markers/ buoys/ hazzards etc

To go on from what the boys have said..

As you will be going over 7 knots (under 7m and under 7knots only require an allround white light) you fall under a vessel that is under 12m and exceeding 7knots so you will need:

Sidelights - seperate Port and Stb, or a combination (if combined they should be located on the centreline of the bow).

All round white light - located along the centre line if possible (obviously on a bream boat its not practical so somewhere aft is fine)

Particularly on smaller boats the all round white light must not be obstructed, and should be placed 1m above the sidelights. Navigation lights must not be interfered with by deck lighting. When you're underway, be cautious of your deck lighting as it affects your night vision unless it's red.

When you're at anchor/moored etc you must display an all round white light (no sidelights).

Lights must be used from sunset to sunrise or in restricted vis.

Be extra careful at night...plenty of unlit markers, bouys etc, and make sure you don't confuse navigation lights with land background lights ;-)

I also have LED deck lights left (Rear) Right (front).

In addition I have cig sockets around the boat and on my console so I have a cheapy plug in map light (from supercheap and the like) for and additional.

As well as the obvious Nav lighting

This just brought back the memories of Luke and I out there every weekend all night without even a touch. We had a few close calls though.

I now have a few huge spotties for the slower stuff but prefer to leave them off as I find you can see way more with nothing bright.

We also have full nav lights but the allround one is obscured by the canopy so i was thinking of changing that.

Hella Marine do some very good LED lights both Nav and DohDohDohDohpit lights...heaps better quality and brightness comaped to others I've seen
