Question Importance of Lure Colour to Lure Choice

Hi guys,

I am interested to know how highly you rate the lure colour as far as your lure choice goes for a certain situation. I know that Starlo (iirc) states in the bible that he rates colour below things like action, depth etc...

How important is the colour, and what is the primary concern when it comes to chosing a lure for the situation? I'm on limited student funds, and have only a very small bank of HBs, without many colours of each variety.

Do you think the action of the lure is more important than the colour?

Just stimulating conversation etc., but I'd be very interested to hear your views.

p.s., bought my first Oar-Gee lure yesterday (red-headed lil' ripper), and I love the action. If it dove about twice as deep, I'd be absolutely thrilled. Are there any deeper diving models?

Hi Chris, I'm sure this question will stir up a lot of different opinions. Over here in WA it seems that gold is probably the best alround colour for hard bodies, although other colours certainly do work. I'm not sure if this is because more people use gold or not.

I think that bright or flashy colours can help attract a fish's attention in dirty water, but at the end of the day, the lure has to pass close to the fish for it to have any chance of striking it. That said, we have seen gold colours outfish others in crystal clear water also, so maybe the flashiness triggers some kind of agressive response in the fish?

I also think that action and size/shape is fairly important too. I know that oargee lures are very successful both here and on your side of the island. I think is largely due to the fact that the lure has a deadly tight action and has a fairly slim profile that bream seem to like.

As I said, if you can put your lure in front of the fishes face, you are 80% of the way their. The other 20% comes the lures ability to trigger a response, and that is where colour, shape and action come in. If you practise your casting and learn where the fish are in your area, you have won most of the battle.

That's my 2c anyway.

Cheers

Thanks James.

On this forum I've certainly noticed that the WAnglers seem to favour gold above most other colours.

Has anyone noticed any clearly identifiable colour trends on the east coast?

G'day Chris,
I believe that colour certainly does have some effect. With the clearing of the water here lately I have actually been using a much brighter lure with good results.

I think like anything else, keep trying different things until something works.
